So I finally bought a yellow sv650 after falling in love with an NESR 'for sale' post a couple years back and I'm hoping to find a few key parts to finish the bike. Does anyone have these parts or suggestions on where to find the following? The pictures below are my bike as is (beside Pilot Power 3s going on tomorrow) and the bike I'm using as a wish list so to speak... any suggestions are welcome as well. I'm aware of the weak stock suspension and could ultimately just use any insight on how to make the most of what's there.
My bike (no extra fairings) & Example bike from NESR post:
|
What I already have:
- Pilot Power 3 F/R brand New
- Scorpion Slipon Exhaust
- Hotbodies Undertail
- Speedotuner (need to recalibrate soon)
- Tank Protector Zipperguard
- Fresh Grips & Barends of course...
- Adjustable Shorty Brake & Clutch Levers
- Some Carbon Fiber Detail Pieces like swingarm sliders, tank protector
- Fresh Lube on Cables, Chain, and misc. wear parts.
What I'm considering and/or looking for:
- K&N Air Filter
- Rear Tire Hugger
- Front Fender Extender
- Belly Pan
- Rear Cowl for Passenger Seat
- Frame Sliders (motosliders?)
- Bigger Windscreen
- Power Commander (depending on K&N filter)
- Adding more lights or Reflectors somehow for visibility
- Yellow/Black Chain and Sprocket Kit
- Touch-Up Paint (Pearl Flash Yellow)
- Maintenance Stands
- Heated Grips or possibly Wind Guards for my hands (?)
- Might have it dynoed if I can find a free one or something reasonable
It's got 13k miles on it, the chain and sprocket seem fairly fresh (no cupping, good tension), and it performs/rides quite smoothly although I feel like it might be running a *tad* lean. I'll adjust the TPS tomorrow and see if it still feels like it wants more fuel.
Thanks for reading, please feel free to pm me or email me with ideas, parts, comments, or questions. Feedback and brainstorming are much appreciated.

In my experience (and this depends on how much you weigh), swapping the front springs is the single biggest suspension improvement. At least it was on my very similar DL650. You can swap springs with little more than some jack stands and hand tools. Worth the ~$100 IMO.
Harbor Freight has a very functional rear-stand for very reasonable money. You don't need a front stand.
You can get a grip heater kit for ~$5 off fleabay. Example. They don't hold up forever. But for the price, I will happily cut them off and replace every other year.
Funny, I thought a good rear shock was a better investment than upgrading the front end on my '05 SV, but I don't weigh much more than the little Japanese dude they designed the suspension for originally.
I like my Motosliders. They've saved the bike from damage from a pickup truck knocking it over and a couple of those embarrassing impossible to stop slow drops in the parking lot. I hope I never test them at speed.

What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
I've been looking into the suspension settings but not replacements at this point. The suspension feels quite stiff to me actually... I'm 180 lbs before gear so I'm kinda wondering if it's been upgraded by the original owner possibly. I'm going to look into it more after I get a feel for the suspension in corners etc. but right now it's too cold to do much besides short commute types of rides.
I might get the motosliders... I need to research sliders for the sv specifically a bit more first.
How would I check the front end for changes? I can't find much about stock, adjusted, or upgraded front forks as far as close-up pics or markings. It sags roughly 30-40% from full extension to me sitting on it in gear, isn't that better than factory settings? Im just not feeling the soft suspension everyone talks about when compared to how my 03 GSXR felt front and back. This might turn into a tech thread now that I think about that.
I'd skip the K&N unless you just want a filter that's reusable.
Powercommander and a proper tune will smooth out the power delivery and make a tiny bit more power up top... definitely helps when done right.
Highly recommend Woodcraft sliders after pitching my own 2nd gen SV away more than a few times (both sides). They've held up very well each time.
Suspension on a fully stock SV is MORE than worth its weight in gold! Springs & Emulators are pretty inexpensive and an amazing bang for the buck upgrade. Shock swaps get a lot of press on the SVrider.com message board but if you save your pennies and go with a Penske you'll be amazed at how much better it it will be and how drastically it will transform the bike.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
ill go one step more and say save the $300 on that power commander and it put it towards a proper shock. the little power the PC gives you isnt worth the price.
hit up zoran at twin works factory. he sometimes has used shocks for sale all rebuilt. i picked up a nice ohlins from him a couple years ago for a good price
