WTB: Ex250/300/400 wheels or similar

Hey,
Looking for street bike wheels to modify for a supermoto conversion. Ideally 3.5"x17" front a 4" or 4.5"x17" rear, with rotors and cush drive included. Probably best if they are from a smaller sportbike like a cbr250, ex250/300, sv650 etc.

If this is for your TM... especially if it'll be raced, don't go this route. You'll likely find they're all too wide in the wrong places, sized for tiny axles, rotor and sprocket offsets will be out in left field, etc. Oh, and heavy.

Agh okay. I saw someone who did this with a crf450r and cbr250 wheels and it seemed pretty easy (I have access to a machine shop and a lot of tools). Sounds like you're suggesting a better option if I want to keep costs low is to lace my own wheels?

If you're in a position to machine the wheels and associated bits, and are willing to risk it being a dead end to try this on the cheap give it a go. With the caveat that again, if this is for racing go another route. For street shenanigans have at it.

Yeah this would be for racing. Thought it would be a fun project and an easy way to get into the ULW classes without having to buy another bike! You're thinking it wouldn't be robust enough?

You're already starting behind the curve being on a 250 smoker vs modern 450 four strokes, mounting those lead donuts on would sap precious horsepower and take away from a motard's primary strength - flickabilty and overall handling. Plus, a 4" rim is going to hamper tire choices. As a novice, pretty much anything that will reliably run 8 laps will work, but you'll be hating them by the time you get to Am.

(And if you try to actually sumo with them, enter bent rim city.)

Thanks for the advice! My basic "getting into racing" plan is to run the bikes I have till they are holding me back, at which point I will upgrade to a real race bike like an SV or R6. So if I can pickup a set of wheels and make it work for cheap I should be all set for novice racing, right?

Or am I missing something big here haha

Brooks has a pretty good deal on a Ninja 300 with rains, stands and some other goodies on the LRRS FB page if you want to go ULW and not have as much maintenance as a motard. Just food for thought although it would go against using what you already have in the stable

I saw that and was thinking pretty strongly about it.. I just have too many bikes right now!
