You're also probably paying $3-5/mo to rent that box. A new router typically pays for itself in a year or two.
That said, if you like your current arrangement, by all means keep at it. Most people won't ever need anything more than the ISP's supplied modem/router combo.
Those of us with "custom" network configs either use more data or want a finer degree of control over our own internal hardware (i.e. we're nerds), or some combination thereof.

To those (myself included) who are curious, is it a failure rate that makes you pass on the SD card? I'm assuming the SD card was being used as temp storage, not permanent.
I run Ubiquity access points, and don't bother with setting up a permanent system for their management platform. I install the software on a windows system, lay down a config, then only fire the app up when I feel like bothering with a firmware upgrade.
If you mean the conversation about NVR on a SD card, SD cards are not built for write heavy loads at all. There are heavier duty SD cards out there, but they're still meant for taking pictures, not writing video data 24/7/365. There's a significantly higher chance of failure using an SD card to record video than any mechanical or solid state hard drive.

I keep debating if it's worth it to upgrade from my original USG and CloudKey to the DreamMachine Pro.

Well, I don't wanna jinx myself, but my shitty old router has been running consistently and without error for almost a solid week on DD-WRT.
I don't have a TON of knowledge on what I'm doing, usually just enough to get myself in trouble... but I got it figured out enough to at least work and be capable of doing what I need it to do. So thanks for reminding me about the open source firmware options!
Think I might hold off on buying new equipment for now until I actually pull the trigger on some cameras. Still researching that one off and on. Looking for more options like the Wyze and Eufy systems.

The UDM-Pro is dreamy. We now have that paired to a couple UAP-AC-LR's situated at opposite ends of the castle. Because the only acceptable amount of overkill is massive, obscene, excessive overkill.
I also decline to discuss what this kit has cost me.
