Well, I appreciate all the input, but I tend to agree with you all that I'd rather buy a bike with some mileage put on it thats been maintained well, than a brand new bike thats been sitting in a crate for 10 years. So now my decision is going to be even harder to make, but I still have a thing for big bikes with big v twins and big plastics.
Nope, Don't believe everything Wiki says. The last year you could buy a brand new 998 made in the same year was 2004. FE stands for Final Edition and less than 1,000 were shipped out to the entire world. Here are the totals for the FE straight from Ducati:
998 Final Edition biposto Europe red 2004 - 277
998 Final Edition biposto Europe black 2004 - 1
998 Final Edition biposto UK red 2004 - 60
998 Final Edition biposto France red 2004 - 46
998 Final Edition biposto Australia red 2004 - 35
998 Final Edition monoposto Australia red 2004 - 20
998 Final Edition monoposto California red 2004 - 112
998 Final Edition monoposto Canada red 2004 - 8
998 Final Edition monoposto Europe red 2004 - 248
998 Final Edition monoposto UK red 2004 - 57
998 Final Edition monoposto France red 2004 - 6
998 Final Edition monoposto Japan red 2004 - 111
What I really want to know is what the story was behind the one black FE they made and how much that would be worth.

I have heard that there are still a couple of 04 998FE's that can be bought new through the factory.
If you have a shop you work with ask them to contact the sales rep. This was at the end of last year, not sure how accurate it may/may not be.

I wouldn't doubt it, a year or two ago i was talking to the guy who drives the Ducati test drive truck and i noticed he had a really clean 916 in the truck to. I asked him about it and he said he had just picked it up, it had gotten "Lost" during shipping and ended up sitting in a warehouse for several years until he had just picked it up.

While you could buy 998FEs in 04, I don't believe they were made in 04. Where's my Duc books...
