    Re: Chain lube

^^ Agreed. I just started using it a few months ago and the stuff is great. Seems to last many hundreds of miles, and has loosened up a few of the stiffer links I had on my chain. Keeps the rust at bay too, big time.

    That's what she said?

    What's rust?

I'm not as faithful as Jim is on cleaning my chain, but I haven't had any rust on if since I installed it 15,000 miles ago.

Just got in a couple cans each of Motul Chain Clean and Maxima Chain Wax.

    I like the waxes.

Time to coat the chain for the winter. Just filled both CBR's tanks with gas & stabil.

    It's sad.

I'm just going to clean them on the bikes and coat 'em w/ wax like I usually do.

if the sprockets are dirty, you'll get that shit right back on the chain. besides what else are you gonna do with the bike when it's snowing

I clean the sprockets too. It just takes a little while longer while they're on the bike.

for the billionth time, jim, 'soaking' in kerosene isn't a bad idea once in a while or after a crash, but kerosene is also the perfect everyday on-the-bike chain cleaner as well.

Put it in a spray bottle.

    Re: Chain lube

i do have it in a spray bottle needle dick. and i have some grime and dirt in my guide & sprockets. i'm not actually soaking them, but it's easier than typing "spraying them with a bottle full of kerosene and scrubbing with a brush"

i thought you were referring to when you previously thought that using kerosene to clean a chain required removal of said chain... cheers for smartening up.

SO, do you guys use any type of gloves when doing extensive chain cleaning? Last time I really got into the nooks & crannies it took me days to get all the crud off of my hands.

    Re: Chain lube

i'll probably stick to my motorex 611 chain clean for regular cleaning, since i dont feel like taking the rear wheel off everytime. the kerosene will be used for winter storage, and whenever the rear wheel has to go off

chuck when using kerosene, since it's a pretty strong solvent like gasoline, etc... wearing some neoprene/nitrile gloves can be helpful if you're doing an off-the-bike cleaning...

however when you're just spraying it on and using a grunge brush and such, it shouldn't be necessary... you shouldn't be getting it on your hands very much at all.

    Re: Chain lube

I don't even do that for winter storage.

Jim, you're just paranoid now. As long as you do regular maintenance on it, what happened to you won't happen.

And chain inspection before a ride will also prevent it.

I'm talking about when you take the front sprocket guard off and clean all the crud out of there.

My hands were completely black after that.

but to answer one of the questions: use mittens when extensively cleaning the chain with kerosine. mittens work awesome. then be sure to smoke a cigarette right after.

Gas works better if you are smoking after, adds a nice deep woods hickory flavor
