    Car stereo question

I've been digging online and I can't find any info on this, hopefully some one can help me out (I know there are a few audio guys out there. I have a 2006 Chevy 2500 with the non-bose non-onstar 6 speaker components in the front doors. Is there a cross over in there? If I put a regular speaker in there will I have to go in and dig it out? Or could I buy a component speaker set up and just plug and go?

You might have to go to a shop and ask. Sometimes the factory component speakers can't be broken up, meaning you would have to buy a whole setup

    Re: Car stereo question

no idea about your stock stuff but would guess it has a crossover

Will you be wiring them to an amp/new deck/stock deck? I'd just buy a set of components that'll have a crossover and run thicker wires. Have you called crutchfield? I have not done any audio work in forever but they might be able to help you out.

Well, they're toast so they're coming out anyway, I just need to know if I can hook up a after market component set up to the existing speaker wires or go back and find the crossover. Well, unless the crossover is in the deck.

Talk with the folks at Crutchfield. They know pretty much everything about stock car stereo. 1-800-319-8943

I didn't know if they gave tech support if you weren't buying. Cool, I'll give them a chance.

    Re: Car stereo question

The components in the door are either going to be crossed over in the factory amp or via crossover cap at the mid in the door and then branched over to the tweeter.. if you need any help with the install we here at Boston Moto would be more than glad to help and can offer you pick up and delivery of the vehicle if needed. give me a call at 774-200-6395 for some more advice or to set up the install.. if you are going to be placing in an aftermarket set of component speakers it is sometimes best to just run new wires into the door or to the mid range wires in the kick panel then tap off to the aftermarket crossover wherever you place it.

    Re: Car stereo question

The stock speakers in that tuck are branched off in the door. The woofer runs full range, and the tweeter has a capacitor for a high pass crossover.

Very easy install. Just use one of the pairs of wires (I usually use the woofer wires) and secure the other plug to the harness to keep it neat in there. The stock setup in those trucks makes it all too easy to install a set of aftermarket separates. Tweeters maount up easily in the stock location, and plenty of room on the back of the door panel to mount the crossover. If you are gonna just run a set of coaxials, just wire it up to the woofer wires and unplug the tweeter.

    Eric, you're the man.

I gotta hack these out and get something else in there stat. Sucks I don't have a garage anymore though, gonna be a cold one lol.

Any recommendation on a coaxial or separates that won't be under powered by the stock system?

    Re: Car stereo question

The stock stereo in there is actually pretty decent power wise. On-par with aftermarket units. You should be able to power most any coaxial just fine, borderline on the separates, but doable. I'm personally a fan of Polk, Alpine, and mid-high-grade Pioneer. Infinity's are good, but a little too tinny in the highs for me. Other good ones are Kenwood, MTX, JL Audio. The other good stuff needs an amp, like Boston, Focal, the good JBL, MBQuart etc.

If you're concerned with under powering them compare the efficiency of the speakers. It will be measured in decibels(db) with (1) watt of input measured (1) meter away. The higher the db value the louder the speaker will be with a given amount of wattage. It is often referred to as "sensitivity".

    example: sensitivity: 86 dB

I really appreciate the offer but height and length I think wouldn't let it happen.
