    Stereo receiver for shop

I am in need of a new stereo receiver for the shop. All I want is something SOLID for a shop environment that will play music from an Ipod or Iphone.. I had a Sherwood unit that did a decent job but it shit the bed after a few months.. The previous Technic unit had run well for 20 years.

I don't need a bunch of Home Theater shit. I just want to play music with plenty of ass to get over the shop noise.

What do you recommend for $200-300 range?

For ease of use, try to find one that has bluetooth, wi-fi (or has an optional wi-fi adapter) and AirPlay. That way, you can leave the iPhone/iPad wherever in your pocket and play via bluetooth.

These start at about the $350 price point though. I like both Yamaha and Onkyo products and even their lower priced models are awesome.

I bought a Bluetooth unit that plugs into my old stereo for just this purpose. Great idea, but very lame range...super annoying when I walk more than 10' from the stereo and the music from my iPhone 4 s cuts out

I have a Blue Tufe adapter that plugs into the current unit that has decent range. Even in the machine shop setting it reaches most of the shop. Unless I am behind 15,000 pounds of iron it works.

That Onkyo looked good. They are gone now.. Lol

I like my Pioneer, compared well to Onkyo and Yamaha at the same price point when I bought it.

If you're willing to use the headphone outputs from the I device , I can give you an old Yamaha integrated amp I have laying around.

Seriously, I'd hit the suburban thrift shops. An honest 100 watts will probably set you back $20

I'm interested in the Adcom if the OP isn't. Doug, give me a call tomorrow when it's convenient. I bought a pair of Manaplanar speakers and my receiver is struggling a bit with them.

    Re: Stereo receiver for shop

I'd look for an 80's vintage NAD stereo receiver on eBay. The stuff is dirt cheap, dead simple, and sounds great. There's tons of it in the $50-$100 range.

And then plug an older Apple airport express into it for Airplay streaming. It couldn't be easier.

+1. But don't limit yourself to NAD. In your price range you can find a lot of excellent vintage gear that compares very favorably to seriously high-end stuff for sale now. If you keep your eyes open on eBay and Craigslist, you may be able to find a really nice unit by Marantz or even McIntosh, for example. You could also look for separate preamp and power amp units. I have a Proton preamp and AudioSource power amp in my home office that sound amazing.

    Also, don't skimp on speakers.

    Re: Stereo receiver for shop

Yeah, but for Marantz you'll want to go one decade earlier, much of the 80's gear is not that hot (excepting the SR series). And 70's gear brings on a whole new set of challenges. For McIntosh, its likely that the only gear in the posted price range is broken, needs major service.

That's not to say that there isn't a whole lot of other good 80's equipment out there. There's still hundreds more, Nakamichi and B&O come to mind.

Yeah, I was thinking more '70s vintage. You have to be a little more careful about what you buy, but there are some great units available at excellent prices.
