Chivalry or stupidity?

Ok.. So last night I stopped off at Shaws to pick up some groceries for dinner. As I am walking across the slushy, snowy parking lot I can see a couple walking out and bickering.

I am prolly 50' away from them and the guy. Who is about my size but perhaps a little more weight (flabby) grabs this girl HARD around the back of the neck. So hard in fact that she almost slips on the ice and let out a little cry when he did. All I heard was the C-word and kicking her ass.

I don't even remember walking up to him but I slammed his right shoulder and loudly told him if he wanted to hit someone or grab someone to grab me. He told me to mind my own business still holding on to this girls neck.. I told him if he didn't let her go I was going to destroy him. (Yes the adrenaline was pumping at this point as was the ego. )He let go and clenched a fist.

At this point a small crowd is starting to gather and someone was calling the police on a cell. The girl is in hysterics and this asshole shoves me with both hands on the chest. I admit I slipped a bit on the snow. After regaining my balance in a quick second, I clothes lined him and then jumped on him. I caught him with my right shoulder area.. kinda right in his neck. I know I hit him at least twice while on the ground. Another by-stander then grabbed me from behind lifting me off of him. This fucker kicked me in the gut while I was being pulled off. (that didn't feel so good) He got up and ran to his truck and then took off leaving the girl there. 45 seconds later the cops showed up.

Statements were given.. no charges are being filed against me. The guy that pulled me off is a local MP for the 92nd security division here in Londonderry. He saw the whole thing and was getting out of his truck to help the girl too. ( I guess he was waiting for his wife inside) The cops told me I was incredibly stupid and I should have called the police first and given them a description of the truck and plate number.

The way I see it is fuck that.. this punk has since been arrested and I am waiting to hear from the police to see when I need to go to court to explain to the judge what happened.

So what would you do in this situation? Was this chivalrous or stupid?

I'd have done the same thing (although I might have gotten my ass kicked trying). Fuck it, I think you did exactly the right thing.

The cop was probably thinking the same thing, but had to say that to cover his own ass.

Was it stupid? Yes and no...it was the right thing to do. But you could have got shot too... You never know who you might face in situations like that. I hope the girl is grateful to you. It's not everyday that someone comes to the rescue of someone else, specially in situations like this one.

She was grateful but more than that she was embarassed and ashamed of the situation.

The MP was really cool though. He is applying for state police job when he gets out next year. He is wunna these big mo-fo no neck kinda guys.

Chivalrous because you came to the aid of a person who clearly is in need.

Bad because this guy could probably file charges. Also Bad, because this girl is probably back with that loser, and taking the abuse.

Good for you though... glad to see someone step up and do what's right.

FWIW, I think it was an outstanding thing to do. And yes, you couldn've gotten hurt becuase of "people these days". But if there were more people like you who acted instead of standing by, "people these days" wouldn't be so bad, would they?

Nice job. Pat yourself on the back. And who knows, maybe it was just what the girl needed to get her at least thinking about leaving. Too bad she didn't do it herself...

Thanks for all the support guys. I heard from the PD.. they said I need to be in Manch next Tuesday for a hearing.

The officer that made the arrest said that I should have nothing to worry about as it is a civil duty to take action if you see something like this. (kinda like the last episode of seinfeld)

He also said they added an additional charge of assult to the guy for Kicking me in the stomach as I was being pulled off of him.

come around a sweeper and theres a car parked in the slow lane with the lights on running and no one around.
I stop back up and call the cops. Angled, and put on the flashers so someone wouldn't plow into it.
Cops arrive, I explain its NOT my car (that takes awhile) and he writes down my info on his notepad and I drive off.

Over the hill there are three kids walking, I start to stop and talk to them when I say F-it its 3:30 AM, I'm beat.

I call the SP and update them about the walkers............

I got to sleep. at 4:45 AM.
Watching college football the next morning Channel 9 has a breaking news report of a cop shot on 93 last night.
I say no way.....I was there!
Guys don't believe me until the phone rings like in the movies.

Its a Manchester detective and wants to talk to me about the entry in the officers notepad.

no and no doubt I'd have been on the phone though. Just wondering why he wouldn't roll backup (assuming he was shot due to solo activity?) on a 3am call in that part of town?

I think it was stupid, but you still did the right thing. It would have been worse to walk away in my opinion
