OK my 5+yr old laptop just crapped out. I need to buy a new one but am short on cash(Just bought a new car 2 weeks ago). I was wondering if anyone knew where to get a stripped down laptop? I was thinking if I could get the computer minus operating system and hard drive it could save me some cash. I just put a 120gb hard drive in my old laptop a few months ago. I also don't want vista, I have a legit copy of XP pro Id like to install. I don't need anything blazing fast. I was perfectly happy with my old machine which was a 1.2ghz celeron. Any suggestions??
Try tigerdirect.com.
They have a lot of refurbs and such. I've had excellent luck with them.

Friendship is like peeing in your pants,
Everyone can see it,
But only you can feel the true warmth.
microcenter.com usually has some good deals on refurbs, acers, etc.
They also have a store outside of Boston.
Wow free laptops This isn't a scam. Just look at the reviews.
You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.

Seriously though, you can get a Mac and do an XP Parallel inside it. MacMall.com has some great deals on the older discontinued models.
my buddy's shop in quincy center has a bunch of laptops & i'm sure he could sell you one minus the software and HDD. plus he might buy your broken one.
and newegg would be my only suggestion. tigerdirect sucks balls, and microcenter will probably be overpriced. but i still like the trip to cambridge to check out that store
Ahhhm, what's wrong with your laptop? It may be a simple fix?
Well I made a little progress today on getting a working laptop. My current one is almost dead. It powers up, lights come on, cd rom spins then nothing. Screen is just black. No bios, no booting from the cd.
We have a few of the identical laptops at work so I grabbed a one that wasn't being used. This one is closer to working but not quite. It has some issue with the fan. It will start normally, fan comes on during boot, then after 10-15 minutes it just locks. Fan never comes on. Stick it in the freezer for a bit you get another 10-15 minutes.
Finally got my laptop up and working again. Turned out the battery was bad. I put another one in and it booted..... almost. The last lock up corrupted the boot sector on my drive beyond repair. I had to reformat the drive to bring to back to life. Only problem was I had no operating system discs to install on it.
I took the plunge and now Im running the free Ubuntu version of linux. So far its going OK. Having some printer issues. The learning curve is quite steep. The first 5-6 hours was hell. After a few days I'm getting it down though. Ive got it setup now so its almost like windows for better or worse.
Have you upgraded the memory yet?
