So the owner of the gym I work at just pulled a nice one on all of us...after the day where it rained like crazy, the kids club got floaded, soaking the carpet completly. We moved everything out, to allow the carpet to dry. She had closed the kids club for that reason. That was on a Thursday. Now mind you, the kids club is a room in the back of the gym, with an outside door access directly in this room, where someone could have come in to take care of the cleaning without disturbing the rest of the club.Next week after, she decides to close the club entirely, using the water damage as an excuse. It seemed fishy to me, but oh well...so I've been home since that Monday (I worked the front desk) and the manager finally called me today, leaving a message onmy cell phone telling me the owner cannot absorb the cost of having a guy come in and suck out the water from the carpet...yeah right. So now we're all job-less, club is closed. End of story.
What are the requisites for unemployment? I was working part time for "nearly" 6 months. I think I'm screwed?

I dont think part time employees can claim unemployment.

sounds like she was just waiting for a reason. Sorry to hear. Looking for a job sucks.
Were you paying state taxes that included 'unemployment', if so...you can collect.
Bummin'......Take a look at the Help Wanted in CL....maybe there is something there...
...that's where I mistakenly found a job...
Gyms don't go out of business in the first couple months of the year - they steal people's money this time of year. Twist you know better than I but don't gyms take in the most money Dec / Jan for all of the New Years resolution dieters?
Well when I started to work the front desk, on the first day two of the calls that I answered were from people working for the rental management and something else, asking to speak to the owner, saying they were wondering when they would get paid for the month's dues...also, a big chunk of the members who had signed up when the gym open almost a year ago, won't renew, because of the way the gym is runned (classes being cancelled all the time, etc.)
One more thing, the message from the manager on my cell was saying that I should be recieving my last paycheck within 2 weeks. My next pay check if I was still working would be due this coming Friday (not today). My husband said that when people are being laid off, they should be getting their last pay check right on the spot, not a da later, not a week later. Do any of you knows the laws for this?

I'm sorry that sucks, a little notice would have been nice. In MA I'm getting about half of my regular pay on unemployment, luckily it covers my bills. I'll have plenty of time to ride this spring, I think.
Well unemployment wouldn't cover my bills, at all. I was working part-time the gym front desk at $8/hour. Ridiculous I know, but the hours were perfect for me, letting me there for my kids in the morning, and when they come home from school, and also letting me work on my business (I'm starting a new client on Monday!!). Unemployment wouldn't be much, but it would be "something".

If you were closer to Wilmington MA I would offer you a job!
You should seriously check out some of the other gym's in your
area. With some experience you should get hired in a second.
Good luck!
