I was married to one, and knew many, they're a great, loyal group. Not sure how the lady marines are though. From what I know of the male groups, you're guaranteed a sandbox run or two regardless of what the recruiters tell ya. Planning on a specialty? I know there's plenty of members of the other factions of the military in here, I'm sure they'll speak to their own specifics too.....

I was active duty in the Marine Corps for 10 years, spending the last 3 as a recruiter.

The Marine Corps does not offer medical fields. They use the Navy for any medical services.

It is great that you want to join. First deside what it is that you want to do. You might want to explore what is available, you may be surprised of the things that you can do. Then find out what qualifications are needed to do what you want to do. Then choose your military branch based on how it will fit in with your goals.

USAF has the best standard of living and their medical groups are pretty good. I'd check it out.

One of my best friends and his sister were both in the marines. I would suggest getting a female's point of view on it. If you can't find any and want to touch base with her, let me know and i'll see if i can arrange it.

    Re: Marines..

SportyGurl, I'm a Marine Officer right now. I commissioned in June 2008. I went through 2 summers of OCS at Quantico, VA, and graduated back in May from 7 months of The Basic School located on a different part of MCB Quantico. I just finished up IFS (Initial Flight Screening) and am moving to Pensacola, FL this coming Monday for flight school. Marine Officers are some of the most well rounded in the service. The Basic School focuses on leading Marines in an infantry environment, regardless of what MOS you have or want. PM me if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer the best I can.

I was in the Marine Corps for 4 years, but as enlisted.

Whatever MOS you decide on, like was said earlier, plan on spending at least a tour or two in the sandbox!

    Re: Marines..

by med tech do you want to be a flight medic? if so you need to do some serious haggling with the Army to get a slot like that. Best bet is to find a reserve flight group that way you're guaranteed a flight spot. I think active you need to have it written into your contract then you have to go through basic, medic school, air assault, maybe airborne, then flight medic school. My Platoon sergeant at medic school was a flight medic and it seemed like an awesome job from all the stuff he was telling us.

USAF gets hooked up pretty damn well with living conditions and thier tours over seas are only 4-6 months.

Army does 12 or more months and some other branches do around 8 but can get extended to 12.

Honestly...The hardest part of the military is the war right now...Regardless of which branch you choose I would consider the one with the least amount of time spent over here. It sucks.

Oh and I would STRONGLY suggest you go enlisted first and then go officer...You would make such a better officer because you know all the bullshit that we enlisted have to go through while officers sit behind the desk and do admin work.

Having been enlisted, I would STRONGLY disagree. Instead, listen carefully to your enlisted advisers (NCO's and Staff NCO's). Trust the experience of your enlisted leadership, and protect your charges.
