I'm with eboos here. I've heard both sides of the debate many times, and after going through TBS with a good mix of prior enlisted officers and officers with no prior enlistment background, I have seen no advantages to being prior enlisted. Being an officer in the Marine Corps is NOT about having 'been there, done that' in order to empathize with the enlisted troops. It's about Mission Accomplishment and Troop Welfare. Leadership traits are independent of prior experience, and I've seen good officers who are not priors, and I've seen bad officers who were priors. Feel free to rebut!
what sound does shit make when it hits the fan?
MARINE

But yea, there are some advantages and some disadvantages....I can see if you were going infantry there would be an advantage in being prior service. That way you can see what a good officer is suppose to be, and you would gain tactical experience and knowledge that a lot of young 2LT's in the infantry dont possess straight out of west point or ROTC (key point my buddy who graduated top of my Infantry class was a prior Enlisted Ranger Battalion guy who served with pat tillman...he did 3 years in the Ranger Battalion 2/75 and blew out of the water any competition for Honor Grad in my class out of the class of 160 because of the field and tactical experience he had). Also the enlisted guys know that you know what its like to suffer in the field like they will be, and how it feels to be a 240 gunner or a RTO if you have been prior service.
If you were going any other branch prior enlisted doesnt mean dick...doesn't seem like it makes a difference from what I have seen, and from what my other officer buddies have told me (whether it be combat engineer, field artillery, med service corps, MP)
but your female so no combat arms for you regardless![]()
depending on your branch yea I guess it does???
dont see whats so funny about that?
i mean if your in the military or was I'd consider your opinion.....you can read one of my OER's if you want, theres a reason i finished top 3 in my squad and top 10 in a platoon of 40...guess I don't know what im talking about
What's your degree in?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! In the Marines?
I'm not 100% sure (You will have to clue me in to what a "med tech" is) but I don't think the Marines have any Medical people. They come from the Navy.
Join the Air Force. They fly all the wounded from the sandbox to Germany and the States.![]()

Nope.
Flight medic slots are hard to come by but not that hard. Just get into a Flight unit and wait for your chance to go to flight medic school. (I had to wait too long so I never went and transfered out for more rank). They usually don't take medics until they are at least a "specialist".
We have a flight medic unti up here in Vermont. Straight National Guard too.

First I want to commend you for your desire to serve your country. Regardless of the branch of service you choose, it is an honorable decision and one you shouldn't take lightly.
I have served 14 years in the Air National Guard, the last five full-time. I wouldn't trade branches of service for anything. Quality of life and length of deployments are just a few things to consider. I also wouldn't give up my enlisted status to be an officer.
The Marines are a tough bunch and if you decide to go that route, be prepared to develop very thick skin. Truthfully, as a female in the military this is a given. The Vermont National Guard had the very first female Adjutant General (top two-star general) in the country. I once heard her say something to the effect of, "If I fail they will say it was because I am a woman. If I succeed they will say it was because I was surrounded by the right men." Be prepared to have to prove yourself day in and day out.
Is it worth it, though? Absolutely. Best of luck in whatever choice you make. I haven't regretted it for a day!
"And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth, wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever...." James Dickey
haha, yea, I've been restraining myself from opening the flood gates. But to keep the feud alive, here you go:
"We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?"
here's the best part... quoted from:

Good post blue eyes. If you're a slut then ok, if not get used to being called one. Default is that you are sleeping with any guy you talk to.

These 3 Marines were sitting in a bar.
One of them says..."Hey I betcha I can take that girl up stairs, drink that bottle of whisky, and finish her off in 1 hour" So they say "Okay prove it"
He comes back down 59 Minutes later, bottle of whisky empty and girl thoroughly pleased.
So the next Marine says "I can beat that! I can take those 2 girsl up stairs, drink 2 bottles of whisky, and finish them off in 30mins" So they say "Okay prove it"
He comes back down 29 Minutes later, bottles of whisky empty and girls thoroughly pleased.
The last Marine says "I can beat both of you! I can take those 3 girls up stairs, drink 3 bottles of whisky, and finish them off in 15mins" So they say "Okay prove it"
So 15 minutes goes by, then 30, then 45, then over an hour.
So they go upstairs and check on him and they see three bottles of whisky empty, 3 girls thoroughly pleased, and him sitting in the corner shivering! And they ask "What happend?"
He said "I was about to get going when some guy kicked in the door, booted me in the nutz, drank the three bottles of whisky, fucked the hell out of those girls, then jumped out the window and yelled "AIRBORNE"'
