The short story is that I blew a rod into pieces that exited out of three new holes in my engine block over the winter in my Eclipse GSX. I *thought* I had found all of the carnage, until last night when I pulled the three remaining good pistons out of the motor to put into another block. The fourth was upside down in the cylinder when I found it, so it's obviously a little lacking.
Anyway, I was missing the wrist pin from the upside down piston, and last night I finally found it.
I have plans for the crank. I will post pictures once I finish with it.Oh, and you'll notice from the oil holes in the first picture (if you use the light reflecting off the journal as your "straight edge" that the wrist pin wedging itself in there actually bent the crank.

On a related note, the new motor has almost 3000 miles on it and counting.![]()

wtf happened? too much nos or boost? that must have been one hell of a fireworks show!
The popular consensus is that a misshift leading to an overrev weakened the rod bolts. So, since that accelerated the wear, it was essentially a time bomb until the rod bolts in one of the four pistons let go.
No sparks, though. I was heading up a hill in Marlborough, and it sounded like I hit a pothole with a big bang, then dropped a vase to shatter on the ground. I left a pretty good oil slick for about half a mile, though. I had my foot matted at about 6500rpm when it let go.
I don't run nitrous in the car. It's quick enough as it is just on boost.I have it tuned pretty conservatively, but that's still good enough for 20-22psi on the street.
Makes for a fun commuter car, though.![]()

I met this kid up at NED at a subaru day once that blew his engine at the track... 2.5rs, turbo, only about 8lbs of boost, but NO intercooler. punched a hole in the block. When he found the piece of block that got punched out it was almost a perfect outline of the engine code that had been stamped into the blockit was great

Nice Job!!!!!
I hope the plans for that crank don't involve anything running with an engine....

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
That'll teach you to use stock rods, and bolts....esp if you are running @22lbs of boost.
It wasn't the boost that killed the rods/bolts - it was the overrev. The motor will handle that much boost daily, even with the stock hardware.
