After several television-free years in our home, my wife actually took my grumbling about a new 4k TV seriously and hooked me up for Christmas. Found a nice UltraHD Blu Ray player for cheap and I'm now currently obsessed with finding great HD movies to drool over.
My wife promptly got the LOTR and Hobbit series (which she loves) and I picked up Alien: Covenant, Prometheus, and AVP (which I love).
What are some great new(ish) movies I might be forgetting about? Personally, sci fi & fantasy are at the top of my list but I love anything with top-shelf CGI or just a really excellent story. Braveheart is still one of my all-time favorites.
Side note: Planet Earth and Blue Planet are amazing on this thing!

Any of the Batman movies are probably in line with your interests.
Rush, the F1 movie
The recent Mad Max movie was pretty heavy on the visual entertainment.
Layer Cake - it's a 2004 film, but way underrated IMO. Not a typical 'stuff blows up' movie, but has some great shots mixed with Daniel Craig doing his best.

Aliens, any marvel movie looks good, midnight special is pretty good with the dark/light contrast when the kid is going nuts.
Some movies look terrible and overdone in 4k. Pacific rim comes to mind immediately. Its doent even look like its real, just a bunch of fakeness. Its hard to explain but if you watch it you will see what i mean.
It's an oldie, but one of the coolest movies on blu ray is 2001: A Space Odyssey. The guy who made this went crazy with detail, and with a good TV you can actually see some of it. You can read all the instruments in the spacecraft cockpit scenes, for example.
When my daughters saw it they thought it had been made recently.

+1 for Mad Max: Fury Road.

Great, my list is growing.
I've noticed some stuff looking weirdly fake in 4k. Sometimes just because you can pick out the detail that normally gets hidden, but a few things have just looked completely unnatural to me even when they weren't CGI.
Annihilation is another one I want to grab in UHD when I can find a used copy at Bull Moose. If you like trippy movies that's a good one.

Anything by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone, Hellboy, Blade II)
Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, Black Panther, new X-Men/Avengers etc.
Inception
Shaun of the Dead
Fantastic Beasts
The Host (2006, not 2013)
If you can ignore the story and just look at the pretty pictures, Jupiter Ascending was gorgeous. I heard the same about Cloud Atlas.
I heard the new Blade Runner was good but haven’t seen it myself.
Not particularly flashy visually, but sci fi where I enjoyed the story: Looper, District 9, Primer
TV series I would totally watch again on a big screen: Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, Firefly
Older, but probably still awesome to watch: City of Lost Children, Brazil, Dark Crystal, Underworld, Fifth Element
I still like Bullett

Certainly not the explosion-fest of Fury Road so not visually stunning in that regard. It's more about the lense filtering in each of these movies and they aren't completely horrible to sit through, IMO.

I recently got a 4K TV and thought things looked strange on it. I found out that the majority of time in life, you do not see in the manner 4K TV is presented. The definition is too great. In reality, things have a tendency to blend together and you don't have the definition that 4K TV provides.

Doing some last minute bday shopping for the wife today and stopped in to Bull Moose, got Annihilation, 300, and 2001: Space Odyssey for about $5 each.![]()

There are 4K movies on pornhub. Or so I’ve heard
Don't forget serenity. Personally I think it's better than most star wars but I'm biased as I was around during it's filming and was friends with some of the cast.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but some anime looks wonderful in 4k. Akira and ghost in the shell have been remastered several times now so they are top notch. Paprika and Arriety (sp) are both great. Vibrant and colourful. Steamboy and howls moving castle are epics.
Let's not forget the matrix. 4k and coupled with a proper sound system is still stunning. T2 is as well.
I'll add:
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
The Lego Movie
Sherlock Holmes, A Game of Shadows
That might be too much detail
How did Serenity slip my mind? One of the best movies hands down. Love the cast. That's pretty amazing you go to be around the filming! Comparing to Star Wars is tough, but I can't say I disagree. I like Star Wars but don't love it, grew up watching Star Trek and SW just never struck a chord for me. The newer ones are fun theater movies though. Serenity is one I could fall in love with (being a Firefly fan).
Akira was the first real anime film I watched and it blew my mind when I was 14. Rewound it and watched it three more times. Always been a huge fan of the style and influenced a lot of my own mediocre art. Neon Genesis Evangelion is right up there for me too. Steamboy & Howls are good stuff. As well as Princess Mononoke and the Ghibli stuff.
