The top is just 3/4 plywood for now glued and screwed. I also plan on adding 2x12 framing lumber as a bench top for added strength. I'll screw those on from the underside through the 3/4 plywood. After that, I'll cap the ends with a 2x6 or something so you won't see any end cuts, and to cover the framing you can see in now.

I finished it exactly like I said i was going to. I used 2x12 framing lumber for the bench top, 2x8 framing lumber for the bench edges and backer board, then put 3 coats of clear poly over everything. So far it has proven great for clean up if something is spilled, or you get greese on it.

The framing hammer in the first photos is 16" and there is a 2' level as well, so I'm going to say it is about 2' wide using my awesome estimating skills.

11-1/4" + 11-1/4" + 1-7/16"= 23-15/16"

I didn't even look at that pic. What did you fill the gap with?
