truck = bad gas milage.. no way around it. Some are better than others but they all drink Heavy.
I have an 02 F250 Supercab Long Bed 4x4 XLT. I get 12 mpg. I get 12 downhill with a good tailwind. I get 12 towing 10 bikes on a trailer uphill in a hurricane.
I got it originally because I had a house in the city and no place to store a trailer. I keep telling myself I should now sell it because I have more property and live in the sticks now and get a Expedition and trailer. I just never seem to actually do it.

Get a DIESEL!!!!
Great Power...Great Gas Milage![]()
A diesel truck in that price range is at least a 3/4 ton rig. If you need it, go that route. If it's going to be a commuter vehicle 355 days of the year, why not get a trailer for your car? Mike N. just got a small aluminum trailer for behind his Civic hybrid for cheap money. A lot less money than I put into my brakes last fall...
I'm sure Moto knows what diesel's can do, this is his typical ride down to the track.

I guess its not in your price range, but Ill mention it anyway. I have an 04 4X4 Ranger XLT X-Cab 4.0L with 70K I am looking to sell. I haven't started seriously selling it yet as I want to go through it first to make sure everything is good on it before selling. Has a Linex spray bed liner, brush guard with KC lights, and 17"wheels with bfg mud terrains. Looking at about $10.5K. Like I said, I know its outta your price range but figured I'd mention it anyway.
Supa Motarded! If you see me backin it in, keep watching...Im about to crash

I have a 2001 Ranger that does very well in many aspects of hauling.
With a fully loaded (2800 lbs est) enclosed trailer I have consistantly gotten 15 to 16 mpg. Even considering the previous owner's lack of maintenance and/ or parts replacement, I'm very pleased with this vehicle.
I have a '00 Tundra 4X4 extra cab with the 4.7 V8 I'd sell like to sell for $8500. I'm the second owner, the truck has 98k on it, and it's in good shape. Four new tires and new front calipers/rotors/pads. I know it's a little out of your price range, but I figured I'd put it out there.
It also has a cap with the Aprilia Racing sticker already on it, so you won't have to run out and buy any Aprilia Racing stickers or anything like that. I also have an extra Aprilia Racing sticker I could through in at no extra cost, you could put it on the rear window of the truck when the cap is off and your bike is in the back. You should think about it. Seriously

Fuel range in trucks varies by driving and by brand. I've always gotten my best fuel economy with GM trucks, had a 99 GMC with a 4.8L that always got 21-22mpg. Had an 03 GMC 4x4 1500 with a 5.3L that always got 18-20mpg. The biggest surprise was the 04 GMC 2500HD with a 8.1L gas engine that always got 14mpg daily driving, and dropped to 10-12 when towing.
I drive a 06 Ford F-250 with a 5.4L now for work and it might get 11-12 commuting if I drive it like a wuss. Hook a trailer to the ford and it drops to 9mpg and slows to 50 on the highway up hills with your foot set on the full throttle
Yamaha
My 98 ranger 4x4 off-road with the 3.0L 6 gets low to mid 20's if beaten like it wronged the driver. In low range 4x4 it gets something ungodly, I think you can actually see the needle drop. No idea what it gets if driven like you are not mad at it.
that's not always the case...
I had a '91, 2wd, regular cab, open diff, ranger with the 3.0/auto and I got 13-15mpg around town, 9mpg in the winter (with sand bags to help with traction), and only saw 18mpg once...for a, literally, an all-highway 60mph trip (the gas stations were right off of each exit ramp)
otoh: I had a '97, 4x4, extended cab, open diff Tacoma with a 2.7/5-speed and I got 19-20mpg day and night, up to 24mpg highway
but to the OP: if you're looking for small/cheap, get a compact truck like a ranger
if you're looking for a nice truck, just get a full size because they get only slightly worse gas mileage than a compact, and are 200% better (nicer interiors, limited slip diff, more power, etc.)

Suppose I should mention mine is 5 speed, and minimal options. Nothing but AC, really. Short bed, standard cab, crank windows, etc. The mileage amazes me though, for the way it's treated.
Choices choices! $8-10k is outta of my price range. I have some fairly serious financial responsibilities this fall to take care of, so I am looking at taking out a small loan then paying the rest with cash.
I go with what I know, and my father has been a Chevy man for a long time, they all have their issues, but its seems some of the guys I work with had some serious issues with there 98 and 99's.
I've been meaning to get down and see Ryan anyways, so maybe next week Ill take a road trip.
I want Burnham's Aprilia Racing Tundra!

I've got a 99 Ranger XLT, 4 door supercab, 4x4, 4.0, 12#K, auto...$3100 FIRM.
I wasn't planning to sell it until after I get my wood pellets this year, but I can get the pellets with my car and trailer I guess.
The good:
New BFG 31x10.50 all terrains
New brakes all around
New upper control arms and front end alignment
Spring shackles and hangers were replaced by the "spring and Chassis" place in Barre last fall. <--- Common Ranger problem.
Runs and drives good
2" receiver and trailer wiring.
The bad:
The passenger side has a few dents
There is an antifreeze smell from under the hood sometimes. Can't find a leak, never makes a puddle, and the exhaust doesn't smell like antifreeze so I guess I don't care.
It will need a front drive shaft at some point. It squeaks a little when the hubs are locked in. I say it needs a driveshaft because the rear u-joint is not replaceable; it may only need the front u-joint.
Bottom of the tailgate (underside you can only see when it's open) is pretty rusty.

I'm looking for basically this exact same thing. Please email me pics of the truck and all the details/features. NEED to buy within the next week as my Tacoma failed the frame inspection and I'm rolling around in a rented Ford.
Thanks.

I have a 2005 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 that I'm not attached to. Needs front brakes but thats included in the deal, pads and rotors and I will do it. Dark green color, 4 door extended cab with drop in bedliner and tonneau cover. no power locks or windows by my choice (less to fix) 39k easy miles. 4.0L V6 with a towing package. cruise control and a cd player.
