I haven't tried to start mine without a battery but I have had a couple of occasions where the battery was discharged to a point that the bike wouldn't crank at all but would still enough to run the fuel pump. It fired up immediately with the kick starter.

After quickly looking around, it appears the KTM EXCs will not run without a battery but you can replace the battery with a large capacitor to filter the power to the ECU and with some rapid kicking, you can get the bike to start. That's most likely how the battery-less bikes operate. Now I may consider making an emergency filter cap to keep in my backpack.

My bike hasn't had one in it in the better part of two years...
And I have a replacement ready to drop in whenever I feel like cheating again.
I like the experience of my current setup enough to not really want it at the moment...but someday I might like a stall proofer.
