good point. I was looking to get some new tires for it anyways. I'll have to start looking more seriously now I guess. How's places like Chaparral for the tires?
Cheng Shin 18 or 20 inch solid knobs.
Kold Kutters work very well. I had the best luck running long screws and running them right through the tire. Run some slime inside just in case you pull one. But i found that the long studs through the tire don't pull out.
The best price I could find for the Kenda Kutters I just got was from Rocky Mountain ATV. Their price was best 'cuz they were doing free shipping. Dick's ATV in Maine usually has some decent prices, but the free shipping killed 'em. Like Mark said, stay away from the 'dimpled' knobbie-type tires. You want something with tall, flat-topped knobs that'll hold at least a couple screws each...
Don't skimp on the tires. To cheap (to me) means cheap materials, which says to me the screws'll pull out too easily...
It seems to me that most of the easy-to-get ice screws are all about the same. I'll be going with 5/8" with these, probably get a coupla thousand, just to be safe. Seems whenever I count 'em beforehand I fuck up and need more. Figured I'd just cover the nut this time...
I may spend a few extra beans and see if I can find some of these Canadian Screws I've heard about. SUPPOSEDLY the screw head's taller than the rest of the typical commercially available jobbies...

Jay, what size tires did you end up with? I liked the Kenda knarly I used on my Rappy last year but can't find the same tire in a 18, I think 21 is the smallest i found. I'd settle for a 20, but would rather 18

all good advice again. Thanks guys. I'll have to really start a shopping list.
Kenda knarly in an 18", says they only have one in stock but maybe they can get more?
another kenda knarly set. do i even have the right size?

Stock size is 20x10-9. Those 8" won't fit on your 9" wheel. Most people I know go larger on the 20 (22") and wider on the 10 (12") for normal use...
The Kenda Kutters I just got are 20x11-9, and Rocky Mountain's still offering free 3-day shipping http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/pr...&sizeAttr=7321
They're a bit more now than what I paid a few weeks ago, but these'll be GREAT for ice screws. Those Knarleys aren't gonna be that great unless you wear down those dimples first...

I thought we had 9" wheels but the first site had me punch in all the machine's info about year and size and it came up with the 8". Oh well.
I'll go check out that link.
K checked it out and they look pretty beefy for the studs. They'll be on order asap.
Do you run the same style for fronts or switch it up?

I should have that CR 250 next weekend and I'm having this terrible idea that I should get into this.
What do you guys wear for gear?
-Alex
I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
Yup, as Stoneman said, the stock wheels are 9". Now that i think about it, it's probably worth it to spend a little extra and get the tire and wheel combo. Then I could just get the 8" wheels and be done with it.
I've got 2 ice seasons and some trail riding on my 22" Kenda Knarly's. They hold studs in great and show little wear from trail use..just the 22" size handles like crap on the ice

MX boots, thermal full body underwear, couple sweatshirts and a set of winter work coverals. Gloves has always been an issue for me, so this season I'm gonna get either heated gloves or some hot grips. Big heavy gloves cause hand cramps for me and there really is no feel to anything while riding.
I use an Arai XD helmet

Get some of the gauntlets for the handlebars and you can wear regular gloves.

I don't wear anything special for winter riding. Just layer upon layer upon layer - ANYTHING to stay warm. This old Jewish kid doesn't like cold weather, so I dress excessively. I normally don't wear MX boots for ice. It's either my 600 gram insulated loggers or my outrageously warm pac boots. I also use snowmobile gloves. When it gets insanely cold, I'll wear my street helmet instead of the dirty ones...

Yeah, I suspect the 22's I was running last winter was part of the reason you were pulling from me outta corners. We'll see though, it's part of the reason I went with 20's this year...
There's some GREAT wheel/tire combos to be had out there right now. Most places are offering free shipping right now too...

I just ran whatever 2nd hand tires I could get for cheap for the front. Then I just ran a few rows of screws down the middle of the tire. You don't really need many up front, just enough to help track it...
My tires got mounted today, so I have an extra pair of rears - all studded up. I thought my bro-inlaw was gonna take 'em, but he got hurt. If ya wanna try the ice thing for short, I'd let the pair go for $50. That's less than the 1000 screws in 'em cost...

Tick-tock bitches, tick-tock. New Kutters are mounted, Holiday Canadians'll be in the mail tomorrow, got my well thought-out pattern figured out (pfffttt bwaaa haaaa!), should be good to go by next weekend...

The heads are supposed to be at least a full 1/4", they have larger washers around the heads and the threads on the shaft are supposed to be deeper and spaced apart a bit more to help 'em stay in. $89 shipped from Dick's ATV in Maine. I'm going with the 5/8" this time...
If you chose to order 'em through them, lemme know in advance. It's special pricing through wunna the local ATV clubs. I'll just contact him and tell him you're in...

Huh, you said shaft..huh huh
$89 for 1,000?
I'm in, I'll take a box of 1,000 @ 5/8"
Got a link? Do I pay you? Talk to me bitch!

Man, it sure is cold out there tonight! The ice ought to be ready sooner than normal if this keeps up.
I have seen those Canadian's before. They look MEAN. The heads are visibly taller than Cold Cutters.
Have you used those tires with ice screws? from what i just read, those are the best ice racing tires out there, but it says screws longer than 1/2" will go through the tire, which kinda sucks as I hate to rely in slime..and i've never had good luck with 1/2" screws staying in.
Hmm, Ronnies.com has the 18" mounted on rims for $199 for the set![]()
