I didn't race until my laptimes at tracks that were raced were mid-pack or better. I gauged that through trackdays.
I use trackdays (infrequently) for a different purpose now but at one time they were a training ground for my racing aspirations.
Your question becomes a lot more valid if you change Thompson out for Loudon.

I got into racing after I constantly passed 600 and 1000's in TD's. I knew I was ready for racing.
I use TD's to work on my skilz. Training does not needs to be performed at 100% all of the time. Although no excuse over the last year BUT the number of sessions I've had I've picked up stuff that is just engrained in my head by repetition and practice.

my favorite is people who do track days and tell people they are racing
You would be shocked as to how many people do it here Paul
With the court ruling that the planning board can't dictate land use, only alterations to it, they're slowly taking a toe-in-the-water approach to racing.
This past weekend there was a team (multi-bike) endurance race - I think the order was like 50cc's, girls, MW, heavyweight.

Donno, but maybe this is one of those places where as "club racers" we're on a bit of a high horse....
I remember when I was doing track days I would go out of my way to correct people to tell them that it wasn't racing.
It just wound up making it awkward as I tried to explain the difference and most people that don't ride the track don't give a shit about the distinction anyways.
By one philosophy, you could put a novice racer on a pedestal, but then you've got some track day riders that are much faster than your average novice racer, they just choose not to race.

When I was doing track days, I had no qualms about looking up to novice racers.
Racing is a very different game.
LOL to be honest, I got so tired of doing this that it factored into my saying "screw it" and actually giving lrrs a shot.
People would even argue with me about it (including my wife, after I corrected her if she told someone else I road raced, when I hadn't) saying things like " let me get this straight: you wear full leathers, ride track bikes with slicks and no lights, go as fast as possible, and people crash regularly doing just that, but it's NOT racing....riiiight"
But, there are passing rules, no simultaneous start, and no trophies!
It's all equally retarded to the general public. That is, only marginally more stupid than riding a motorcycle at all...
Explaining how I broke my collarbone to people at work is extremely frustrating for similar reasons. In 20 seconds of small talk by the Keurig, it is impossible to convey how my crash was different from when Cousin Billy had to lay 'er down on the way back from Lack-onia and now has hepatitis from the blood transfusions.
"I hope you were wearing a helmet!"
"That's what you get for riding a MOTORCYCLE"
"God bless, you're lucky to be alive"
Everyone I explain it too all seem to grasp the concept![]()
A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
I get this too.. people say.. he races!!! And I have to explain otherwise.. lol
