Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
A couple of other things to try for posterity.. you can use a Dremel to cut a line in the head of the bolt, then use a big flathead screwdriver to undo it. Or you can use a Dremel to grind the sides of the bolt head down and make it into something close to a hex-head bolt, and then remove it with a wrench.
The latter works well if you round something that would use, say, a 14mm wrench; you grind it down into something that you can undo with a, say, 13mm wrench.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Yep tried things like that, extractor kit, wleding another bolt in th head of the stripped one... All failed
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
So, as my bike sits at GMD, I still have all my fairings I plan on re-spraying.
Anyone have any suggestions on quality spray can paint? The tank has the factory silver paint job and the tail fairing matches pretty well. I'm planning on trying to find a similar silver paint for the side fairings and lower to spray as a base coat, and then do larger portions/patterns in a gloss black, then clear it all. I don't care if the silver doesn't match perfectly, I figure I'll break it up with enough black accents that it won't really be noticeable.
Figure one of these 27 shades of silver will be close enough:
Paint - Spray Can and Touch Up at AutoZone.com - Best Paint - Spray Can and Touch Up Parts for Cars, Trucks & SUVS
I was going to grab a few cans of silver from autozone or a similar auto-parts store and find out which one matches best. I will use any generic black.
For a clear, my research has led me to this:
Spray Max 2k High Gloss Clearcoat aerosol
I'm actually pretty handy in the bodywork prep department, so I think this may actually come out decent. I'd prefer to get some color matched paint and hit it with a spray gun, but color-rite has insane prices ($200 a pint!) and I can't find anyone else to match by color code.
Although...I'm considering something like this to try it out, but $100 is a rather pricey experiment.

Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Checked out Auto Body Parts and Supplies in Wilmington today. Chatted with the guys for awhile, they were super helpful. For what I wanted, we decided going with color matched paint in spray cans with a quality spray can clear was the best route. 100 bucks later, I left with 2 cans of my paint, 2 cans of clear, and some primer.

Hit the plastics with the DA, sanded some more by hand, then sanded some more...and then more. Got it in best shape as I could. Made my own spray booth, hit it with a high build primer, then wet sanded like a boss. Plastics are ready for base coat. Not sure on a design so I will probably wait until I get the whole bike back and do a combo of silver/black.

And some stuff showed up. Just need the bike now...

That's all for now.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
What DA do you use? My pneumatic one sucks balls. Just doesn't have enough power to keep sanding good enough. Need to pick up an electric one.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Harbor freight. It works perfect for how seldom I use it.
With a 20 gallon tank t lasts pretty long, and there is always plenty to sand by hand while it builds back up. If I put it on low speed I can actually use it indefinitely.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Wtf... I must be using mine wrong. But I try to use it more to grind paint away than finishing sanding. But it ends up leaving little circle/curved marks everywhere.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
OK, I can finally give a good assessment of the linkage I've been testing. Conditions were ideal at Thompson yesterday. Peter Kates stopped by and we chatted about the new link and the understeer I encountered with it at Palmer. He immediately said raise the rear end. MORE? The thing is already VERY tall in back as I have the penske at max recommended height. He gave me the greenlight to go one turn beyond max on the height adjuster, so I did. We made no other changes to my shock. I can barely tippy toe the bike now. :/
The result was brilliant. I definitely had more feedback, feel and traction on the edge of the tire. Zero understeer all day long. I didn't actually beat my previous PB, but I was running consistent laps right at my PB all on my own through traffic, nobody to chase. The bike was planted. No spinning or sliding and I did not tear up the tire! In the past 4 sessions at thompson would smoke the rear tire.
In the end, this is a big step forward. it WILL lead to faster laps, but I have to learn to trust the new level of grip and push even harder to make that happen.
I do think it is a nice upgrade to my setup. I feel more confidence, have more grip, and the tire is much happier.
Mine is a prototype link that in NOT perfectly linear. It does have some rising rate, just a lot less than stock. This is important IMO otherwise the bike will settle too low late in the corner. The guys who built it are Cylons and Munch on 675.net and they are production ready if you want one.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
I forgot you were here, we should have linked up! Unfortunately I had a disastrous day.. 3rd blue group session (first one there wasn't a crash), one of my front brake lines exploded out of the banjo fitting right before T1; talk about oh shit moment. Luckily I was able to cost off the access road and use the rear brake before hitting the fence.
I didn't know Pete was at the track, would have liked to have him check out my setup.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Oh, that was you? how did that turn out?
Peter only stopped by to drop off some forks. He was sick and headed straight home.

Which one do you have? The 6" composite looks like a copy of the Dynabrade sander, which is very nice.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
6" Self-Vacuuming Air Palm Sander
Never used the vacuum portion of it, it was just the cheapest option.

well besides shitting myself having only a rear brake at the end of the straight... it turned out surprising well. I borrowed a brake line setup from a Honda, rubber lines, bled it several times and never felt right. Was always squishy on the first pull of the brake lever. But, I went out for some red group sessions with my friend, since it was his first track day, so that was a plus.

Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Did you hit anything or go down?
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
no. watching the video, it took me about 1 second to remember I had a rear brake and get on it. I aimed right between the air fences straight ahead, and luckily there was a road (albeit gravel and dirt mostly) at the end of the straight. I stopped before even reaching the fences. Threw the kick stand down and walked away.
I'll have the video up at some point.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Wow, I'm surprised the rear brake stopped you by the fence! Good job!
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
you and me both... guess that 2-up riding rear braking finally paid off.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
I would just throw out those undies though...

Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Kates is done with the bike, going to grab it early next week. Ignition was a bit dodgy and held together with tape, so I just ordered the Woodcraft keyless ignition harness along with some clip-ons.
Once its back and New England Crit Week is over, bring on the track days. At this point, if I can turn some decent times at NHMS I'll probably wind up racing this thing towards the end of the season. Not so much because I NEED to race, but because I NEED some track weekends back in my life. Probably just the heavyweight races to start. Is Penguin my only option for getting track time at NHMS? Can I just renew my race license from 2 years ago or do I need to go to s?
I should have bought Freddy's r6 at this point.
Re: 2006 Daytona Track-day Build
Freddy's r6? Yes, you should have. Does woodcraft have a harness kit for the 675?

Yep, its like 60 bucks.
Pete posted a link to his bike in another thread. Makes me feel like a real dummy. The only consolation I have is that it was not for sale when I bought my bike, and all in I still have about 1k left before I am over the price of his bike.

Funny, that same thing happened to me! He listed it for sale right after I bought mine...
