It seems the biggest risk is what is happening behind you since you have no control over it. I always pull to the side, always keep the bike in gear, and always watch my mirrors. For me it's not uncommon to actually turn and watch a car as it slows behind me.
I had an incident 2 years ago where I slid up next to the car in front of me because some asshole was hard on the brakes and didn't look like he was going to stop in time. It was a little embarrassing because he did, but it was damn close...He was on the brakes so hard I could hear the tires scuffing.
