On the surface there are obvious subcultural differences (style of clothes worn, etc), but once you dig deeper there are a lot of similarities. Both attract a strong poseur element, people who buy an expensive piece of butt jewelry that gets ridden at most to the local bar to pose, but both also attract people who are very serious about riding and invest themselves deeply in it.

In my opinion, Harley riders are more about the trip, the cruise, whereas sport riders also like the hard cornering and performance you can't do without scraping pegs on a HD. As far as attitude, it goes both ways. Some Harley guys are the nicest guys I know, but at the same time, I've known HD riders that hate sport riders with a passion. Which reminds me of "the wave". I wave to everybody and generally get more waves from sport riders, though probably because I'm on a sport bike.

Lots of chrome, and black.

Lots, both good and bad. From the eagle, (which i would say is a symbol of freedom) to the notorious gangs we all know about.

Yes, I grew up around Harley Riders, some being the 1%er type, there are even differences between Harley riders. You have your HOG Chapter wanna be badasses, your midlife crisis enthusiast, your old school classic rider and your outlaw bikers.
On the Sportbike side you have your Squids, your sport touring types, your stunters, your racers, your wanna be cool kids, and your old guys not wanting to let go of their youth.
Generally I see sportbike riders as younger and Harley riders as older. Both can be stubborn, irresponsible, and self righteous.

Obviously both groups have haters of the opposite but i believe a lot of those people are the "poser" motorcyclists and aren't gonna be riding for the Long haul (they'll quit riding in the next few years and maybe take it back up around midlife crisis if ever again). I grew up with my father riding older harleys and his friends as well, while they knocked on the jap bikes for kicks they had nothing against sport bikes in general and many will come to talk to be about my Duc and acknowledge the pros/cons of all bike types.
