Just put on a a new Shoei alleged "hard" shield
In the past I was windex and paper towels but too soon there started a light hazing begins.
The directions say Not window cleaner Not paper towels.
NOTE Before EPA if dirt got in the pulp they threw it out now they do have to make the towels out of it. So some paper towels have grit in them and coarse grains.
water and soft cloths I don't think will cut greasy and sticky dried bugs
what say you
I use a very mild soap on my fingers and while under running water gently rub off all the dirt/bugs and then blot dry with paper towels, put about 8,000 miles on my shield and it looks brand new.
+1 to warm water and soap and I put the soap on my (already washed) hands and spread it over the shield with enough water to make some suds. Then rinse off after a few min of "scrubbing" that way.
Bugs are only stuck on there because they're dehydrated, rehydrate them and hit em with some soap and they'll leave.
On the road, I take a small can of hondashine and some microfiber cloths, saturate the shield with HS and let it sit for a minute or so, then wipe clean.
I use the Rain-X bug removing car windshield washer fluid and shop rags (from a box of rags). Put it in a mini spray bottle, like the kind you find at CVS in the travel size aisle and put it in your under seat compartment.
It also helps to repel the rain and it doesn't ruin your windscreen.
Hondashine does the same thing Jim and Chuck
Now what does the same as hondashine, plexus, and rain-x...

Fuck. That was my next question.Originally Posted by ssg
I never use paper towels -- or even those blue shop towels -- to clean plastic or eyeglasses. Wood cells are soft, but they have components in them (like the lignin in the cell walls) that are harder than plastic and will definitely scratch.
Best solution is to get the "box of rags" for rag painting from Home Depot -- made of ripped up t-shirt material. That and some water (and maybe eyeglass cleaner if it's really dirty) will never scratch your shield.

Plexus and microfiber for me.
Lots of warm water, dish soap, and an old t-shirt for me. By the time the visor needs replacement, it's usually time for a new helmet anyway.

I use the Rain X Glass Cleaner although the Bug and Tar variety does seem like a better idea. Like Chuck, I also transfer it to a travel spray bottle for use on the road.
Walmart sells round washing/waxing pads that are about the diameter of a cocktail coaster. They're made of a soft cloth/chamois material and come if a 4 pack if I remember. One for home, one for the road and two spares left over.
If they're dirty and you want to know how to refurbish them, go here.
I use a big white cotton athletic sock to keep my spare clear or smoked shield in, depending on which is on the hat. A bottle of water and the sock for the bugs and stuff cleans the shield up. I ain't seen the dishwashing, rainex or anything else that doesn't haze the shield sooner or later and at 40 or 50 bucks for new ones, I don't wanna experiment. On the other hand, sooner or later they're too sandblasted to use anyway..![]()
they tell you not to use your shirt on eye glasses because it scratches. and they are right even with the anti-scratch coating on the glasses mine are still scratched.
microfiber cloth for your visor. and use that cloth only for your visor.
Plexus and Honda Polish have always worked well for me.

Dish soap on a wet paper towel (helps to take the bugs off better than just your hands). Rinse with warm water and wipe gently with a soft paper towel or cloth. My shield lasted 8 years. Replaced it at the end of last season.
I wet a paper towel and let it sit on it for a bit and then ipe clean. works like a charm.
