...it also looks like you have to buy a bunch of gear from California. The official rules provide for entering without a purchase, but only by visiting a participating store...of which there don't seem to be any on the East Coast (the postcode selector only has two options, both of which have a leading '9').

the only 2 D stores in the states are in San Fransisco and Orange county CA. They are nice though.
