ear plugs and a liter bike

for those that use ear plugs and ride a liter bike, how comfortable are you with the throttle? not sure if this is the right question.

i'v gotten use to the engine sound and how much throttle i can play with up till last week when i started wearing the ear plug. it got little scary in the curve when i can rev to the top end without knowing it and sometimes too slow trying to get use to the silent engine.

ear plug worked great when i was on a 600 because you could rev the shit out of that thing and not worry much.

what do you think?

Been riding a liter bike with ear plugs for 10 years. Don't have a problem with it. Like anything else you have to get use to it.

I am too used to the engine sounds without my ear plugs, so I ussually run without them unless I know I'll be on the highway for a long period of time.. It helps to have a good helmet that does not transmit loud noise well!!

From what I have used and what I have heard.

Arai - Great options to be sure you get the right fit ! Sweet ass graphics and shape design. Excellent air flow when using the vents! But not quiet.... I had one Aria - Signet, and noticed it was loud, only reason it wasn't comfortable was because it was the wrong shape to match my rounded head. Ear plugs always a good idea with Arai!

Shoei - I have owned an RF800 & an RF900. Both I liked a lot! Air flow could be better, but comfort and noise levels were great! Under 70 miles an hour I can barely hear any wind noise and I can clearly hear my engine! Over 70 the wind comes up from the chin area and can get a little loud. There is a deflector available to cut this down. I only use it when it gets cold, otherwise I like the air coming in the helmet to help keep my head cool, and deal with the noise. the air vents on the helmet do not allow enough flow to keep you head cool alone in the summer. (Ear plugs suggested over 70 mph...

HJC - ??12 ? I'll have to check when I get home. Fit is great! Very comfortable! Noise is not too bad, slightly louder than my Shoei, the air flow is better, but still not as good as the Arai. (ear plugs required over 60 mph !

The difference between a quiet helmet and a loud helmet is about 6 dB. Ear plugs are good for at least 25-30 dB of noise reduction so the helmet noise becomes moot if you wear earplugs. With that in mind, you can shop solely by price, comfort and features which opens up more options, assuming you decide to wear ear plugs.

I have an RF800 and would never ride any distance without ear plugs. It's not a loud helmet, but with ear plugs it's just so much more peaceful and less fatiguing. Next helmet will likely be an HJC. They seem as nice as Shoei for half the money.

Is your bike really that quiet that you can't hear it?

I always wear pretty beefy earplugs and I can hear my engine just fine up to speeds as high as I would dare ride on the street.

Mine is kind of vague though, the sound doesn't change all that much as you near the redline, I usually shift based on "feel" more so then sound.

Some bikes it is very obvious when the bike is running out of breath others it isn't, I guess yours it is not.

yea it's very quiet. all i can hear is WIND above certain speed.

Maybe try ducking down a little, if you're riding that fast you probably don't need to be sitting straight up anyway. But then mine has a higher windscreen so maybe that's why I can hear it.

how you know i didn't or did tuck down. i didn't get an agressive bike so i can sit straight up.

I just started riding with ear plugs this year and now I never ride without them!

At first, Is was running into the rev limiter without even knowing it. Now I’ve gotten to the point where I can do everything by feel. Defiantly more "at one" with the bike.

You take away one sense, and then others sharpen-up.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing - can you hear car horns, police cars, ambulances, etc.? Sounds like it could be kinda dangerous to ride with them...

Yes it is legal, and yes you can hear emergency vehicles.

I find that they cut out most of the "white" noise. Once you get use to it you can generally ride better. This is due to not having to try to filter out the noise on your own. I'm less fatigued mentally and more alert on long rides.

never tried ear plugs...althought i don't do much highway riding. The times i did the wind noise didn't really bother me

I used to just use them for highway traveling, but find myself using them for back-roads too.

If you have a pipe on your bike and the other road noise, you'll appreciate a good set of ear plugs.

Well, the noise on the 250 certainly isn't deafening. The wind bugs me more on the highway and the little 250 gets blown all over the place, which I notice more than anything else - that, and the traffic...

i only ride a 600 but i've found them to be quite helpful....when i remember to bring them along that is....
