Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

Was on my way to work and some lady pulled out in front of me to take a left. I grabbed the brakes hard and I think the front locked up and I went down and slid down the road underneath her car. Was scared as shit when I realized I was half underneath it and kinda wedged into the tire. I got my ass outta there as soon as I realized I was still alive and stood up.

Pretty sure the bike is trashed. Helmet is trashed, pants trashed, gloved did their job but the seams came apart. Jacket seems to be ok and I seem to be alright. Was discharged from the er with a little neck soreness and shoulder soreness and my thumb is a little tingly/numb, but otherwise ok. Although my thumb tingling is kinda bothering me as to why it's doing that.

I know I screwed up and went down but I'm not sure if I was better off since I didn't t-bone her this way. I don't know maybe I should've been covering the brake as soon as I saw a car on the side street. But regardless everything is hindsight now. Can't really do anything about it. Just thank my lucky stars I'm still here and she stopped and didn't run me over.

Went down and took a look at the bike. Here's some pics of it and my gear:

Jacket (I think this is actually ok still:

    Pants:

    Gloves:

    Helmet:

Only visible damage on me lol

    Bike:

I'm really hoping to heal up quick because I'm signed up for Tony's on the 29th and 13th plus two more in NJ after that and I know I need a new helmet and gloves at least. Thank god I have the SV for a trackbike. Might give street riding a rest for a little while though.

Not quite sure why they're coming up as links and not images? Any hints here? lol

Glad you've lived to ride another day. Sorry about the bike.

From the looks of that leg you learned the same lesson about textiles that I did. My rash was on the hip though. Gotta love leathers!

Lol me and my friends are building our mini chopper right now. I'm honestly thinking about buying it back for the motor hahaha.

And the textiles didn't go through because my jeans looked perfectly fine when they came off. I think it was from rubbing on the inside of my pants I guess. It hurts a little but no more than a scraped knee. I'm just gonna say that I fully advocate that those are better than jeans now though lol.

Re: Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

That sucks. Glad you're okay, though.

So did you slide under the broadside of the car or the rear end? If you slid under the broadside, it seems like you should have a decent chance of suggesting that the other driver was at fault and should be paying for damages (including gear and the bike).

If you do buy the bike back, please let me know if you're looking to rebuild it (I should have an extra pair of EX250 fork legs once I get my new-to-me, better-suspended fork legs installed)...or if you're looking to part stuff.

Wow looks like you got away relatively clean. Bike looks way worse than you or your gear. Moto GP is good stuff.

Re: Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

RedVTR, I went down to the right side. I believe the left side of the tank is crushed from the car as far as I could figure.

And yeah I slid right under the broadside of the car with the front half of my body underneath with my right side wedged up against the rear tire. Scariest goddamn thing to realize I was underneath the car with me having know idea if she knew I was there.

As far as buying it back I guess it would depend on how much it was. I prolly won't rebuild it if it is totalled as I was looking to get another bike in the spring anyway.

Re: Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

I only have a summary right now apparently the report is available after 10 days. As I was leaving in the ambulance (boarded and collared lol) the cop said hey this is the summary I'm putting this in your tank bag. Give this number to the insurance and don't worry she pulled out in front of you it's her fault.

I didn't really get to talk to her as the cops/emts kept trying to get me to sit down. Woman was hysterical though. I feel kinda bad, but at the same time I was a little bit more disturbed seeing the underside of her 4runner.

I'd say the gear worked perfect!

Show that helmet to someone that wears a "half helmet" or one of the "beanie" types.

Just imagine what your face would look like without that chinbar/shield.

Yikes! That really sucks but I'm glad you're OK!

The thumb tingly stuff is most likely a pinched/bruised nerve which should improve over the next few days. DISCLAIMER - I am not a doctor but I did have similar symptoms when I crashed and fractured my clavicle. That's what they told me it was. Did they do any X-rays?

Re: Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

No the doc decided that since I was fine mentally (no concussion) and no broken bones he said lets just send you home and put ice on the sore/stiff spots and if anything persists for an extended period after this schedule a follow up.

And Tony I agree. I saw that thing when the cop picked it up and showed it to me and was like thank you god for full face helmets. I really wanna show it to the pudding bowl riders lol.

I've found they are a difficult bunch to convince....even with hard evidence such as a helmet.

See, in their eyes they're never going to crash and they have numerous reasons why.

Regardless, feel free to attempt to educate the uninformed masses....I still do.

    Damm, that sucks dude...

I had a similar incident years ago, and I've learned to cover the brake anytime I see a cager coming towards me. I've been doing it so long now, it's second nature...

Glad to hear you walked away relatively unscathed...

Wow, sucks man! Glad you're ok, though.

When you do the paperwork for the insurance, MAKE SURE THEY PAY TO REPLACE YOUR GEAR, TOO!!! Too many people forget about that. Insurance covers property damage, too, not just vehicle damage.

Re: Experienced the dreaded left hand turner today...went down too

I don't know if your state is at-fault or not, but particularly if it is, don't hesitate to go back to the doctor if you have persisting pain, even if you're pretty sure it's soft-tissue stuff that will go away with time. Pain and suffering awards are based on a factor of medical bills (at least in Vermont, consult a lawyer in your jurisdiction), so spending an additional $200 on a second doctor's visit could translate into a significantly higher pain and suffering award. Keep track of OTC stuff you buy, too, if you end up using vitamin I to keep moving.

(I learned this after sitting around virtually unable to move due to whiplash resulting from the driver behind me turning my then-girlfriend's Jetta into a Golf. That sucked on a whole lot of levels, but it would have sucked less if I had been whinier and gone back to the doctors a couple of times.)

    Good luck.
