Agreed...I said the same thing in another thread about gas prices a little while ago...but...I didn't realize until Thursday night when I went to fill up before leaving for Boston on Friday HOW BAD it was....just a few months ago, it costed me about less than $20 to fill up the hyundai when it was empty...on Thursday evening...I was looking at the counter and it kept going up...cost me $27 to fill up. I was really pissed off.

I don't think running 93 when your bike only calls for 91 is a problem, but I wouldn't be running av-gas

The octane specfied in the manual is different from the numbers on the pumps. I think 91 in the manual translates to 87 pump. There is no need to use 93 in anything but a highly modified (high compression) motor. They just sell it at the pump because the profit margins are higher and people think they are buying better gas for their stuff.
I used to have a buddy with a corolla that would "treat" his car to some 93 if he was in the mood.![]()

the manual for my '04 r6 says it requires 93 or betterOriginally posted by Karaya One
Some bikes do need 93 - R1's I think? - but overall run the lowest octane that does not ping.![]()

you are correct about the difference, but every owners manual I have seen specifies (M+R)/2 and from the european sites I frequent, their owners manuals specify RON but their pumps also indicate theOriginally posted by Honclfibr
I think a lot of you are confusing Research Octane numbers with pump gas octane. Most manuals I've seen have specified the octane in terms of Research Octane (RON) as much of the world rates their gasoline in these terms. However U.S. gas pumps use the (RON + MON) / 2 method to compute octane; 91 RON is the approximate equivalent of 87 octane, which is what my bike manual requires and what I used with no problems at all with detonation.
RON value, I don't think their's any confusion

Heres a condom. I figured since youre acting like a dick, you should dress like one too.
if it makes any of you feel better I just put $72.00 in my van. I should only have to fill up 2 more times this week.

so the big question is, and i know there's always controversy on this, what would be better 93? or 89?.... i'm on a 97 yzf 600. I'm really new to the whole motorcycle maintenance thing so I for some reason thought that a high revving engine would be better on a higher octane fuel.
the 600r is a more of a sport/touring bike... the R6 may require high-octaine, but i doubt the 600r has the compression ratio that requires it. i'm 100% sure you could get away with 89 or 87.Originally posted by neuthunder

Only one of my bikes requires 91 or greater octain and that's the R1. The rest, the R7, YZ/YFZ450 and KTM 450sx all say 95 or greater![]()
Is the extra $.80 per fill up going to break the bank? I don't think so when you're on something that gets 50mpg

The RC requires 91 or better also? I just follow MFG's requirements.
I have noticed I get better gas mileage using a higher octaine in my Explorer. I went from the recomended 87 to 89 over the past month and enonomy went up 1.4 mpg and only costs me an extra $2.00 a tank! Well worth it..
For $2.00 I get another 30 miles per tank!![]()

This is what i have from the suzuki shop man
The bike is a 2001gix
"Use only unleaded gas of at least 90 pump octane (R+M)/2 ..."
and also
Next paragraph
Gasoline should be graded 91 octane (research methord) or higher ....
Hemi motor all aluminum with 12 to 1 for my compression, it is a gamble and in August which tends to make things worse.
What i was thinking was mixing it say 89 and 93, but what is the cost savings 5Cents? Not really significant to me. It's almost silly and reminds me of that tv hipster with that gig... for 15Cents a day you can feed a family over in boolo boko .....
