Can you edit routes on a standalone unit? If so, is it easy?
I thought Basecamp is free? If it is, can't you just create a route, and forward the gpx file?
Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul.
Current: 690E. Past: FE250, S1000XR, S1000R, Streefighter S, Monster S2R1000, RC51
Depends on the unit, but regardless, it tends to be a bit of a pain because of the limited interface.
Basecamp is free, but it doesn't include any maps. It's designed to work with either the maps on your Garmin GPS device or the Garmin maps you have installed on your computer. In theory it's possible to install Basecamp, then install open-source mapsets in Garmin's format, but most of those are not routable. If you use one that is, you can build a route and export to GPX, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work well on whatever device you're using due to map differences.

I too use a Garmin Nuvi that will accept routes with a RAM mount. If you want to know which Garmins accept routes look here:

I used to use mapquest to create routes and load them directly into Garmin products but now that they've dropped that function I use the Harley route planner tool even though I don't own a Harley.

The Nuvi sometimes reboots when I'm riding due to the power cable attachment on the back moving around. It's annoying but for the handful of times per year that I use it I can live with it vs spending 5x as much money on a dedicated MC unit.
