story......
the bike is a project. I was running the bike with the stabilizer in it to get some in the engine. Chris does a little burnout and we let it run a little longer. Few minutes later I turn my back to do something to my bike, look back and the pig is leaking all over the floor. I kill the engine and call chris to get a bucket or something. Let it leak out, pull the tank cause I was gonna paint it this winter and decide to just run it a little longer til it runs outta gas to hurry up the process of the leaking. Fuckin thing runs for like 15 minutes with no tank and just keeps on leakin. I bought it cheap with the expectation of dumpin a couple of bukcs into it. Have put over 2 bills in it and still isn't runnin right. Come spring I am gonna take it to Chris' guy and see what's happening and if that guy can take a look and have some insight.
Doesn't like to idle - usually peaters out after a couple minutes.
Bakcfires sometimes
pops a bit
sounds kinda funny
leaks gas and oil
is becoming more of a pain than I think it's worth but the spring will tell when I get it looked at by another shop/person.

troubleshooting 101... where is the gas coming from?
sounds roughly like the carbs are gummed up inside and seals dried out and cracked... random guess, but it probably hasnt been run much in a while
start here... carbs off ebay with some new gaskets and boots.
then find someone that can tune em.
or if you or highsider are carb saavy.. take em apart, clean 'em, buy a gasket set and reassemble. (note needle and air/jet settings for reassembly.)
see where that gets ya.
am i on cloud nine or is that close?
p.s. oil leaks are another problem entirely.

already had the carbs gone through by my mechanic. Gonna have chris' guy take a look at it in the spring and see what he says. Carbs on this bike aren't easy to find and because they are fairly rare they get up there in price - almost as much as I paid for the bike. I am in no hurry right now so I will wait for chris' guy to take a look as see what happens![]()

Leaking gas and backfiring would kinda sound like a stuck float / incorrectly set float height to me, your carbs will fill up with gas until they pour out the overflow tube and into your cylinders, causing a rich mixture that leads to unburned fuel in the exhaust...unburned fuel hits the hot exhaust pipes and gets a breath of fresh air, pop, secondary combustion?
Though the fact that it continued to leak after you pulled the tank makes my theory kinda fucked, once the levels in the carb went down it should stop leaking if the float bowls were the culprit,I'm a computer guy
It does good burnouts.....with no tank even!!Originally posted by TheIglu

Carbs would have been my guess, too....
Are any of the float bowls cracked? I know, from experience, that fuel will pour out like a sieve from a cracked bowl even if you cannot see the tiny cracks that often occur on older carbs bowls. Anyway, check it out...![]()

thatnks honlcfukker. the leak that poured everything out was from underneath - didn't even bother to look at that yet. it can wait at this point. The minor leak appears to be coming from the carb area. I was told that they were rebuilt and I know that my mechanic looked at em but I don't know if he took them apart. I thought that I had asked him to soak them but I don't remember - we have talked so much about what could be done I lost insight as to what WAS done.....Originally posted by Honclfibr
