Mass State police Motorcycle Unit

The Massachusetts State Police motorcycle unit has been disbanded in order to cut costs..This would have been the unit I would have tried to get on, as i'm sure any of us who want to be police officers would have...

Maybe cause of the High price of Harlleys dunno but the MC Patrol used to be an economy move compared to cars.

This means a lower profile for all of us, and less sympathetic law enforcement.

I'd vote against that cost savings measure if it came up here.

Our town only has two cop cars and both are blazers... one of the guys rides and is TRYING to get a bike... but he says it's unlikely to happen because it can't be used year-round and town is so small... No traffic to weave through, no crowds to control, his bike request does not look promising!

The HD Lease program for bikes is incredibly generous. A town pays about $1500.00 a year for the bike and HD covers all repairs and such.

After a few years, they just swap keys for a new one.

Actually, that sounds like an excellent way for police departments to save money; in the summer, they all ride around in those cruisers with small block V-8's that aren't necessarily know for their fuel economy....

Although I bet a police car is quicker than those HD Road Cattle they ride....

It's a shame, but I can certainly see why they would do that. Police work is a high risk activity as it is and placing the officer on a motorcycle just adds to the risk, especially since police officers can't perform their duties while wearing proper safety gear.

If the run rate for the MC unit is cheap due to the HD lease program, why can't they just park the bikes and let them be deployed to barracks? They could use the bikes for special ops, e.g. the Super Bowl support they cited as a benefit. Put one or two HDs at each barracks, and have a couple of MC riders assigned to each one. If it makes sense to use the MC, just get on and go...?

I don't think the State Police riders did much heavy lifting. Everytime I saw them, it was for some VIP escort or such.

If HD's are cheap maybe its their is extra insurance costs.

Why couldn't MC cops wear some armor. I hear the "SPaceballs Uniforms" can be auctioned.

Maybe some bloated graft sucking politician has his fingers in the
Crown Vic business

Or its just some attention grabbing deal begging for more money in an area of perceived popular support

I think it's more that modern gear would interfere with what they do. Removing a full faced helmet for a traffic stop would mean diverting their attention from the stopped motorist, a decent set of gloves would have to be removed before drawing their sidearm, etc...

we've actually got motocoppers here on modern bikes... K-series BMWs, and they've got full gear, including a full-face helmet. it's just a flip-up type.

if a podunk town like albuquerque can afford it, you can be damn sure boston can.

HaHa. I used to get chased on my dirtbike by the WPD motorcycle cops about fideen years ago. Thank god those Yamahas can't travel up steep dirt hills.
