Not actually a gyro cam, a gyro mount. Which leads me to the question, why the hell can't I buy one of these?

I avoided the urge to suggest you're a miserable old man the other 5 times I felt it today. Here we are at the 6th opportunity.

Look for a gimbal. Ive seen them as cheap as $75 for a chinese 2 axis for $1k for a nice 3 axis. They are common for multi rotors theses days.

Yep, found those looking online today, I'm not sure how easy it would be to convert it from a suspension mount to a base mount.

    what a big device ...
if your looking for a motorcycle gyrocam that is smaller an can be build by yourself:
    GyroCam - peg down racing
he also offers to build it for those who don't want or can rebuild it themselfs
The build log will be completed in a few days
here is some of the last footage:

you may also look at my Facekook-Page Motorrad Gyrocam | Facebook (mostly in German) where you can find some history and more footage
I'm not selling them (It's just a hobby-project) - but feel free to build yourself one of this.

Seems interesting this SteadyRide, different from everything that is out there. Too many Mickey-mouse gyros nowadays, most requiring tricky calibration, external batteries and wiring. Tried so many and got disappointed.... fingers crossed on this one.

Single axis will be more than enough for the effect I want. The MotoGP camera is like that I have read somewhere.

I could give a go with the GyroCam of the video... but not sure about the quality build and warranty considering the asking price. It could very a disheartening purchase but I guess I will wait for the Dareware model.

    Re: MotoGP gyro cam

I can't wait to see the commercial competitors to be out on the Track ( the one from www.motogyrovision.com will be released first -> today)
I'm curious of it to see some 'shoot-outs' between them (Dareware, Motogyrovison) and mine model 2014.
as far as I can see - mine is the smallest, cheapest and has been tested the most of all on tracks (for over a year and all around the world) - mine may not be the best at all - but surely good enough for a price about 100-120$ - when DIY

    Re: MotoGP gyro cam

I started investigating this with the idea that hardware from RC helicopters could be used to build one simply and cheaply. Because helicopters are difficult to fly, most of them are designed to fly automatically in a steady state, and you disrupt the steady state to get them to do something.

I found an integrated piezo gyro and servo motor that seemed to be just the ticket. The negative was that without additional hardware to maintain the horizon, the gyro would drift back over time. The positives were low price ($69), compact size and minimal power requirements. The size proved to be most crucial as there isn't a lot of room to mount these things if you are using a GoPro.

Have access to 3D printers (and SolidWorks) so I cobbled together a housing and an arm to hold the camera. Then I convinced one of the engineers here to redesign the swing arm to make it stiffer. The 3DP parts only added maybe $30-50.

I never went farther with it other than using it myself because 1. there didn't seem any way around potential liability and 2. the guy stopped making the unit. I still have one extra if anyone is interested. And we just designed an even better mount and the new GoPros are even smaller and lighter.

There is another thread here somewhere but here's an example video.

Why use hardware when you can do it in software? Check out what my 125GP nemesis Jonathan Leung (#250) did with OpenCV:

But that is post-processed, is it not? If so ow long does it take to process the clip on a laptop?

Yes it's post processed, but I think Jonathan was aiming for it to run at real time speed so it could work with a live stream.
