    took it in the rear

Monday i rode to work, yes i am in Maine, yes 1/2 of my commute i had to avoid ice and snow, yes i am on a Ducati S2R1000 I know i need a GS and studs for this time of year or a KTM..

i was on my way home it was dark about 36degreesF i stopped in the line of traffic that is always at the intersection of County Rd and Spring St. hand on break bike in N both feet on the ground i hear a screech and my ass is airborne. crash i am on the ground. i get up reach down and hit the kill switch and turn to glare at my attacker.. a woman in a pickup truck.. she has her phone in hand and is dialing 911. the kid in the car in front has gotten out and asks if i am ok, i say yah and get him to help me lift my bike..

ok here i stand.. i should prolly take inventory and see what is messed up one mirror is gone, oh there is it laying on the ground. the other is shattered (crg bar end mirrors). exhaust is scratched frame slider is dinged.. as is clutch cover. licenses plate bracket is twisted up.. doesn’t look to bad.. but she is going to moto milano tomorrow and Gerry will tell me how she really is. oh and me right umm ..my rt shin is sore prolly scraped thru my ballistic pants my chest hurts a little must have smacked into the tank..

We move the vehicles out of the road so traffic can keep moving and wait for the cops.. the lady driving the truck does get out and said something non committal and are you ok like. i was trying to be civil and avoid loosing my shit..(something i have spent many years working on) and we wait.. the woman says she told the police that 'everyone was ok the biker was waling round and picking up the bike' so i guess they are figuring no rush maybe she should have told them i way laying on the ground not moving. The Kid tells me he heard the screech and looked in his mirror and saw my rear tire over my head. I must have had that front break on cause i did not hit his car.

the cop finally arrives and is obviously not a biker. blows the whole thing off as a fender bender writes no citation but does call in the plate #s and takes our drivers license’s so there is a case # he never looks at my insurance info or reg paperwork. he gives us cards with the case # on it and that is that.. i am stunned.. i have been involved in other accidents and there had always been a report and all kinds of discussions on what happened. nothing i completely forgot to get her insurance info because i had always gotten better info thru the police so i did not bother.. the cop goes back to his car i go back to the bike and make sure all my lights still work and have to kick the front break to make the break light let go and work properly again.. then is the joyful activity of trying to merge without mirrors and drive the last 4 miles home.

i called my insurance when i got home and got that ball rolling. and yesterday after work brought the bike over to Moto Milano, Gerry stayed after hours to wait for me cause i was a little late. i figure the insurance company can look at it there and Gerry will tell them exactly what is wrong.. at first look he says the swingarm is tweaked and the exhaust is bent in, this could be bad.. i am sure i will get a full report by the end of the day

Ok I will start by saying that sucks and its good your ok. Then I will mention the balls you must have to be willing to even try riding this time of year. Could have been worse. Good you are ok. I'm inspired (but not enough to freeze to death trying to ride).

Hope it works out with the insurance. Your company should be able to track down the other driver's info. It might be helpful to get a statement from the kid in the front car.

Re: took it in the rear

thank guys. i ride year roound i do want to get somthing with some studs but no one makes knobbies for the width tire i run.. so i need a motard i guess..

my neck is fine, i had on my backpack so i think that helped.. my chest is really sore i definatly pulled something there.
i work on a contract basis so i really can't take the time even though i would rather rest for a few days.. i don't "have to"

we will see what Gerry comes up with at Moto Milano.. maybe i will be getting an 1100s to replace my girl..

besides if i take off work i won't be allowed to MINI RACE!

my story would have been sorta the same except there woulda been another sentence added in there somewhere... Something like "and the kid had to pry my hands off the drivers throat" but I guess that's just me. Glad your ok man, and apparently ignorant cops are everywhere eh?

    Glad your OK

Your not a Doctor you don't know if your OK.
Neck aches and dull headaches and tingling that runs down your arm.

Seriously I really do this. If I am at a stop of any kind I try to pull to the side and also tap brakes so lights blink.

    Good for you:

    - for riding in the cold like this
    - for keeping your cool and not attacking the women who hit you
    - for checking yourself out and being sure you're ok
    - for NOT trying to extract 'blood' money by faking an injury
    - for being a mature person when the temptation to rant is so great

Hats off and good luck with the bike!!!

just because you weren't hurt, doesn't mean she should not have gotten a ticket for her mistake.. i mean unless she hit blackice.. she's got really no excuse for that, and the fact that you weren't hurt is amazing.
    glad to hear that

Hey don't say anything about not being hurt officially.
Wait a week or so. Some whip lash injuries aren't really
    apparent immediately.

One thing positive is that at least you're not missing
prime time riding weather waiting for the bike to get fixed.
I got rear ended in April and it sucked seeing all these
gorgeous days go by with no bike.

    glad to hear that
that is what i thought would happen i mean you hit something you get a ticket.. WTF.. i am trying to come up with a sane carefully worded complait to the local PD about my treatment.. or lack there of.

the insurance guys told me while we were being recorded that if anything felt of in the next few weeks to go see the dr and let them know after and it would be no prob. so far progressive has been good to me.

sorry to hear, man. definitely a shame that that officer sounded rather indifferent.

hope your bike turns out either as good as prior condition or better, in a timely fashion and with little to no headaches for you (injury- or insurance-wise).

yah i was really shocked I have always had good experiences with law enforcement when i have been in trouble or possible in trouble. and the Westbrook PD has Motorcycle Officers that i have seen out on their bikes this time of year.. which is why i want to talk to them about it.. maybe one of the Motorcycle officers needs to talk to the officer who responded to my accident and set him straight..
