I like Speed & Strength's short gloves... they are pretty durable for the price, and there is a good range of colors/styles. Check sportbiketrackgear.com.

I've had these for about a year and a half and they are holding up great.

I'd recommend wearing gauntlets. Plenty of breathability, great protection, and durabilty for decades.

I've been doing a lot of research for some shorties. I wanted something for hot summer riding. I went with Shift Hybrid X. Neoprene top with knuckle protectors, Great airflow, leather palm....and because I like odd colors, I picked them up for $11 shipped. I should be getting them next week...I'll let you know how they are....
Otherwise, I am looking at A*'s SMX-2 or 3 Air for anything under 85 degrees.

Just ordered these:
I'll have them in a few days and let you know! D3O armor in the knuckles, elastic stitching, etc. I had the icon superduty for 4-ish seasons and they did pretty well, but are just getting ratty.
Note: these are just my around-town warm-weather gloves. I have proper gauntlets for normal riding.

I like A* Octane short gloves. Great fit ,vented well and hold up very well.
Lee Parks Deerskins!
Rev It Comet gloves -- best I ever had -- got them at Seacoast Sport Cycle so I was able to try them on, grab some bars, pay and wear them out the door. Got the black/red.
And don't believe everything you think.
Held's short race. Kangaroo skin, vents and armor. And damn comfy.

In actually going to ask Todd next weekend at NJMP if he makes short gloves for his Heroic line.
I have teknic Chicane short gloves and I love them. Come just to the wrist, good articulation around the knuckles, hard protector, and have pretty good ventilation.
