What would you folks have done??

Actually, it was. That Nova had a 327HP/350 in it with almost 400 lbs of torque. I could drop a gear and get on it and paint quite a line on the pavement with it. He didn't see the humor as I did...

I said something ludicrous like, '...sometimes when I downshift, it goes a bit faster than I meant it to...'

i might have pulled in with him and told him how cool he was and how impressed i was with his riding skills and how lucky he was to have a total lack of consideration for the safety of others.. especially people he doesnt know and how envious i was of his stupidity.

and then i would have said...

    NOT!!

    Rider etiquette?

haha interesting stories, it blows my mind how stuff like this has happened to everyone.

I was riding w/ my ex gf on the back in pembroke on day and this black R1 blew by us in the same lane like we were standing still......that guy had a chic on the back and neither of them had helmets on. I wish i could have chased him down to flip out on him for being such an idiot. I got back to my ex's house and was all pissed off about it for like 2 hours.

You are not allowed to break the speed limit to pass a slower vehicle. At least you weren't back then...
In RI you are given 5mpg over the speed limit to make a safe pass in a passing lane

that's "miles per gear"... so if you leave it in 6th you get 30 miles to complete a safe pass. That way you won't have to exceed the speed limit.

I've been under the impression my entire life of using various forms of motorized transportation that it is OK to speed to pass. You just can't keep going that speed after the pass.

For example, I'm in the middle lane, travelling at the speed limit, being paced by the trailer end of a semi rig to the right of me, which is bouncing all over the lane like they do. What do I do? Is my safest course of action to slow down? I dunno, I like to be in front of bad shit happening, not about to run into it.

They teach you in basic driver's education classes about how boxing yourself in is bad. Don't drive the same speed as the cars directly to your left and right. If everyone is traveling the speed limit, how do I get out of a situation where I am boxed in without speeding? Again, do I slow down? Why would I want to be behind people who obviously don't know how to drive safely (pacing each other abreast)?

I dunno who comes up with the laws and stuff, but basic common sense tells me that moving slower than all these vehicles that weigh much more than I do is a Bad Idea™. I'll pay the ticket if I really get one for speeding to overtake a semi or something similar.

There are also minimum speed laws for these same reasons.

Also - if you "accidentally" hit 85 going around an old lady doing 30, well that's not what I am talking about here. Come on. If you can "accidentally" go from 40mph to 85mph, you probably shouldn't have a driver's license (either that or get that friggen beast off the road, it can't be legal).
