Especially when they end with a sudden impact.
Dumb old lady pulled out right in front of me. I would have made it but she slammed on her brakes instead of gunning it.
Luckily (?) the bike landed on top of me so I avoided some damage there.
I don't really remember if I hit my head or not...will insurance cover\inspect the helmet?

Pretty sure that if a helmet takes an impact, it's time to be replaced.
Well I don't really remember, I just remember having one wheel on the ground and then being on the ground myself. Insurance companies have turned into quite the..."non-christians" lately.

i've heard that insurance companies will cover gear, they just hate doing it and will likely take some... "persuasion"
hurray, strikethrough!

yes they will replace your helmet...well, I know Progressive will, as they start you off with $1000 for CP&E (custom parts and equip.) which is ver handy if you crash.
I know some other places only start you off at $500...so ask them about it...if your helmet has marks, dents, scratches on it...you probly hit it...if not, than you didn't...right
I just tell them the way it is...if they get sassy with me, I ask to speak with their supervisor...be professional, yet assertive...and if they total it, make sure they give you what the bike is worth, and then talk em down on the buy back option.
Progressive (in VT) treated me very well, and my adjuster listened to what I wanted, and tried to make it happen...accidents suck, and dealing with Ins. sucks...and totaling your bike sucks...but, thats life I suppose...hope you get back on the horse soon bro!

Oh she's not totaled by any means, I think at the point of impact I had gotten down to 15-20 mph max. Unless there's damage to the forks or frame from hitting her car, all I could see was a bent mirror and scratches on one side.

If you hit her car at that speed, there's a very good chance the forks are bent, even if only slightly. You definitely need to get them checked. Frame damage is probably less likely, but get that checked as well, just to be safe.
Sorry to hear about the accident. My old car got totalled in a similar fashion, except it was an old guy in an SUV who decided he absolutely HAD to gun it out of a parking lot through a little gap in traffic to make a left turn to go westbound on the road I was traveling eastbound on. When he realised he couldn't make it, he seemed to freeze up and started to brake. If he'd mashed the accelerator to the floor, he might have just barely made it (my tires were locked up and leaving skid marks on the pavement by this point), but since he didn't, I broadsided him. Wasn't going very fast by that point, but it was a 12-year-old Honda Civic, so it didn't take much to total it.
Seems that people's instincts are to brake when they realise they did something stupid, even when it's only going to make matters worse. I actually saw a woman get flustered as an ambulance was coming up behind her and stop her car in one of those right-turn lanes with a triangular island separating it from the opposing-traffic lane -- obviously, she blocked the entire lane, and the ambulance had to swerve into the opposing-traffic lane and go around the island. I couldn't hear the ambulance driver, but I know what he was saying anyway.

Yea if I had kept my head I would have leaned back to keep from lifting the rear tire, but I was in a fairly upright position at the time.
It may have been less of a collision if I hadn't had to let up on the brakes to keep from flipping.

Def check those forks, they are making things lighter and thinner all the time, seems it doesn't take much at all to knock them out of wack.
As it's a non business day, I haven't spoken to my insurance yet. Will they come pick it up? I really don't have time to bring it down to a frame/fork shop and get a ride back.

sucks dude. i'll come by sometime this week and take a look at it. It doesnt have to go to a specific frame/fork shop. any reputable dealer/shop should have the equipment

Helmet is done... claim it, along with any other riding gear that received the slightest damage in the crash.

Insurance will cover your helmet but likely not anything else as those other items are not mandated by law to be worn. That's my experience at least.

maine does not require helmets but progressive insisted on paying for me to replace it. asked to see it asked where i bought it and added that cost onto the payment check not trouble no hassle. That was 4 years ago.
