holy shit, i know the extremely high gas prices are nothing new, but i just had my most expensive week ever. 120 miles = $10.00, not only that, i have been riding a lot and (80-120 miles per day) and having to fill up every day. thats somewhere between $7.50-$10 every day for 7 days. my grand total for gas last week = $60 bucks. i want to throw up.![]()

You only get 20 mpg with a bike?![]()
its actually about 30-32 mpg. 93 octane is about 2.60 at my local mobil. i ride really hard, way up in the revs. hardly ever out of 4th even on the highway. sometimes i think about how what kind of mileage i could get if i drove nice and easy, than i click down 2 gears and punch it.

Does the 954 need 93 octane?
I run only 89 in all the bikes I ever owned.

owners manual says 89 minimum, but ive always run 93 in everything i owned. i dont even know if there would be a difference. i just feel better putting the higher octane in. it could all be![]()

Could be worse, right? Every single morning there's a Hummer H2 at a local gas station refueling. Every single day. Every single morning. I can only imagine how much $ he's dropping on fuel.Originally posted by bara954

All higher octane does is make the gas resist premature ignition before the spark plug ignites it. if you don't have a problem with premature ignition, there is no reason to run higher octane

When I worked at a Kawi shop, we had a summer of ZX-6R's coming in with major head problems. All sorts of build-up that ended up being from running too high an octane fule.
Also, I was up at BCM a few weeks ago talking to their lead tech Kyle and he was sayiong about how those bikes did not need 93 octane fuel. They ran best, and made their best power on lower octane fuel. He was working on a chipped and piped 916 when I spoke with him. He called the higher octane fuel a myth for bikes that don't need it - they aren't any stronger or faster and in fact LOST power on the dyno.
Some bikes do need 93 - R1's I think? - but overall run the lowest octane that does not ping.

Bingo. It not only doesn't help, but it will sometimes hurt because it is so resistant to detonation that well - it doesn't detonateOriginally posted by Karaya One

Just like if you go out and get some 105 octane unleaded... You wont run any better and will probably run worse. Untill you retune the bike (or car) for the fuel. If you aren't having a detonation problem now, higher octane is a complete waste.

91 is hard to come by. Most stations do not have it so 93 is what my 12 drinks!

If your ride doesen't require 93 but you feed it 93 and ride on the highway in 4th like a hee haw, why are you in here bitching about gas prices?

im bitchin because its rediculous that gas costs 2.60/gallon. its not like i threaten the gas station attendant, i pay it and choose to use it as i see fit, but that doesnt mean its right. this is actually the first time ive ever heard of people not running 93 in their bikes. my dads got a harley, my moms got a shadow, my bros got a 929 and i have the 954. we all run 93, always have. every friend i know whoi has a bike runs 93, im pretty sure there are a lot more people who run 93 than dont, but maybe thats just in my experience. my bike recommends MINIMUM 89, doesnt say anything about higher octane hurting the engine.

My old dodge ram 50 (mitsubishi) puckup would ping more with higher octane, cause it screwed up the anti knock sensor

I think a lot of you are confusing Research Octane numbers with pump gas octane. Most manuals I've seen have specified the octane in terms of Research Octane (RON) as much of the world rates their gasoline in these terms. However U.S. gas pumps use the (RON + MON) / 2 method to compute octane; 91 RON is the approximate equivalent of 87 octane, which is what my bike manual requires and what I used with no problems at all with detonation.
i think the lable on the gas tank said 91 (RON + MON)/2.
i could be wrong. i'll have to check.
"fuckit!"
I suppose it could be worse. We could live in Europe and have to pay $5 a gallon. Ouch!
