Bottom half is almost done. Guess that 4th cog was worse than I originally thought.

My camera didn't pick up on the rounded dogs, but the pic gives some idea of the fun that went on.....and then there's always that pretty sweet shift fork.

Yeah, once I noticed I decided I was too lazy to make a better pic.

Not sure yet. Top end is coming apart later today so I should know that answer by this evening.

OEM slugs are 27 grams lighter than the replacements. I'm guessing because the metal is much more porous than the new ones.

    This is pretty funny...
Totally missed this the first time around. Yeah, I made that piston using auto body hammers, six sets of salad tongs and a dung fired forge. I have to go to Bhutan for the right type of dung, but it's worth it.

Let's just say that the old rings were pretty much ready to fall off the pistons.

Waiting on all the crank main bearings and one con rod bearing to come in then it's time to reassemble!

    can......not........wait!!!

    Maybe not.

I'm certain this motor does not want to go back together. Highly concerned about making first weekend.....

Been trying. Broken bolts and metal shavings tend to hold progress up.

The pistons face the transmisson and the connecting rods attach to the spark plugs, right?

Metal shavings appeared courtesy of the install of new main bearnings where the block casting took some material off the backside of the bearings and the broken main crank bolt....well, I'm not sure what happened there. Did the two step torque method and it busted at 25 ft/lbs. That's 4 ft/lbs LESS than the spec.

Got lucky tho because the bolt didn't break inside the case, rather it held together literally by a thread. The pic doesn't clearly show it but that bolt has one thread which prevented it from causing major issues. Guess it's bitter-sweet.

    Re: Wocka wocka wocka!

Almost have this thing squared away.....

....that is until the valve train went on and I rolled the motor by hand then shortly after noticed all 4 of my nice iridium plugs were smashed by the pistons just barely enough where I will need new ones.

Since this is obviously a clearance issue, I get to send all 4 slugs back to the manufacturer for measurements which means the top end is getting gutted again.

F that, pull the plugs, get TM to make some spacers, and put new ones in with the spacer washers to keep them off the deck.

Actually, just switch over to surface gap plugs? No other clearance problems when you roll it over and check the plastigage?

I'd love to melt this thing down and make bullets out of it right about now.

The engine is well beyond the plastigauge part. This thing is ready to.....no wait.....this thing *was presumably* ready to rock until I checked the plugs after manually rolling the crank.

No other clearance issues other than the plugs and I imagine that's related to the crown on the top of the pistons. The new slugs are much different then the OEM ones so it is, in part, not really a surprise that this has occurred.
