    Yay for dampers....

Just wanted to give a shout out for my damper...
By far my favorite winter addition to the bike (well, besides the jet kit and carb work). I was hesitant to spend the $ on it, but after hitting some twisty frost-heave-alicious roads this weekend am beyond thrilled with the Scott's. I have no idea how I lived without one. Only have it on a medium setting but holy crap what a difference. Now my finicky R6 stays where I want it rather than bucking around shaking its head. Highly recommend.

I've put Ohlins linear on both my bikes and love them. Doesn't Scott's rotary use Ohlins internals?

The only way I can put a damper is to get clip ons. Scotts emailed and said they dont make one for the Gladius. However with the new RaceTech springs it's so solid now. The Ride to the races rides was the first test and I was amazed, it left like a damper.

I believe that is correct... I know there's a close association there somewhere...

    0000000

I'm actually thinking about replacing the HESD (Honda Electronic Steering Damper) for a Scott, if they make one for the 07, that is.

    Edit, and sadly, they don't.

Had a GPR on my 600RR, waiting for a deal on one for my d675 to come up. The factory one just doesn't cut it, and its much much much better with one.

I believe that is what is recommended.

Course, they still recommend changing the oil in your car every 3000 miles too. So who knows.

Agreed, I will never own a bike without a dampner. Would have avoided my first accident if I had one and it has saved me many times on 495 already

I've ridden over 100,000 miles and a few track days in the last 10 years and never felt the need for one. Am I doing something wrong?

    Re: Yay for dampers....

riding couches? J/K. A lot of bikes can be ridden happily without a damper, but most high performance bikes including the latest 600/1000 bikes are going to benefit from a damper in some situations. Hard acceleration out of corners, bumps in corners, and full throttle changes in direction are a few examples of times a sharp handling bike might need a steering damper.

btw, femmecat, less is more. Set your damper as loose as you can while still getting the benefit of the damper. A little shake is OK as long as it is quieting down, not amplifying.

    Re: Yay for dampers....

Well, your list of bikes would explain it too. Great bikes on there, but they are all pretty dull knives compared to a race bike. HP is also a factor. Small bikes usually don't generate enough of it to get things out of shape. Chasis stiffness, again, your bikes are flexi-fliers. A stiff bike will need a damper much more than a flexible one. The flex in the forks and chasis dampen things.

It's not your riding, it's your rides!

If I had the money and I was in the market for a damper, I would definitely go with a Scott's.

I ride an '04 R6 and have been contemplating getting one for a while. I don't seem to have any issues without one. On the track the only place I have had an issue is by the treehouse but even then if I keep the front heavy at the right moment it's not a problem. What am I missing?

if you aren't having an issue than you don't need one. the only thing you are missing is heavier steering effort. dampers are a cure to a specific problem, if you aren't having that problem i wouldn't worry about it. some people deal with the shimeys and shakes better, others get real nervouse. if it's not bothering you or effecting your riding i'd just continue going without.

Yep... I have it turned up a little less than 1/2 the potential...

With my 2000 R6 I wasn't having an issues, I had just heard from a lot of folks how great they were. I was hesitant to spend the $ for something I didn't think I really needed...

But now after 2 rides with it, I couldn't imagine life without it.
I was a skeptic too... but it really is amazing.
