While I wasn't on the ride, as an observer it is really great to see this kind of thing being raised, particularly early in the season.
There's never an excuse for marginal passing and it's too easy not to call others on it, but it's the right thing to do. Respect!
I tend to think that when you're in the right frame of mind to sport ride, you will be neither excited nor scared. Both will impair your judgement, and in street riding, judgement is arguably more important than any skills you might have over and above a moderate level of competence.
You should be calm, collected, calculating your options and planning your riding based on your environment. Think about what your heart rate is telling you and keep your adrenaline in check.
I am sure almost everyone here has read The Pace, but here's a link if not.

"fuckit!"
for what its worth, I was leading and when I passed a car I did NOT use my directionals, that was on purpose. All too often on group rides when passing is involved the left directional becomes and indication that we are going to be passing and when we are actually going to turn left some get confused and speed up as if to pass. I have been on rides where a left turning bike gets" T" boned because the guy behind him thought they were passing.
When passing in a group it is rare that you will get the whole group by in one pass there for its up to you rbetter judgement not to follow blindly the person in front of you. You will eventually get to pass , it might only be one bike at a time .
I also used hand signals on top of directionals when turning. Just as an added precaution.

Well, I put the bike in storage today - although perhaps Ill be able to pull it out for a ride on a mild day in January. Thought it would be fitiing to post this in the thread from the first group ride of the season.
Can't believe this ride generated a 9 page thread.
Man that was a good day. Good people, good food, temps in the high 70's.
Lets hope for a day like that next April 10th.....
Its going to be 59 degrees on Tuesday Manny! What are you thinking?

Even with the 58° temps we have to much sand in our area now. Patches of ice here and there in shady areas....Me and my bike went the season without a scratch (less a spike I picked up in the rear tire). Time for me to put it away and find an alternate source for my fun.![]()
Mine will be ridden to Greenland NH for some rearsets tomorrow and put to bed.

No I said it will be nice on tuesday! I'm riding tuesday, and then it is going away. I said originally I would keep it out until it snowed. It has already snowed and it is still out. I will be riding tomorrow.
