In the spirit of probably doing the exact opposite of the intention of this thread, I saw two dudes on Spyders this morning on my drive in. My truck said it was 16 degrees. Damn! Good for them. But, DAMN!

Depending on model, there are heated seats and grips, as well as significant heat from the engine.

    Still, Dayum.

You guys don't wear heated gear do you? I have heated socks, pants, jacket, and gloves... single digits don't bother me at all.

Re: Where did you ride today?

I rode ice on Dec 9th in western MA. That's an al time record for earliest start yet.

On another topic, heated gear is nice and all, but tires are like bricks in those temps, and ice can always be lurking. Never been happier since parking the street bike and going with ice tires on the dirtbike. Turns out, riding in tiny ovals is great fun!

Re: Where did you ride today?

Yesterday I sold a bike. Guy rode it home from central CT to NYC in the 36 degree weather. No heated grips or gear, he had 4-5 layers on top, two pairs of gloves, multiple pairs of socks.

I rarely enjoy exposing myself to discomfort for no reason...

had a "Tokyo drift" moment last week in the miata, perfectly dry on ramp, 8 degrees, hadn't swapped over to winter tires....would have been on the ground if on the bike..

Shitty tires and many knobbies are like bricks at those temps, but high end street tires with extra silica are plenty pliable enough after a brief warm-up and, more importantly, not riding like you're on the track (something this board doesn't seem to understand if avatars are any indication) in extremely cold temps.

I've done plenty of winter riding on my 1290SA; rode Puppy Dog Route in the teens through southern VT on my 1290SA several years ago, Hampster in snow and sleet, forced off the Blue Ridge Parkway in a snowstorm several years ago in April, did Bailey-Hazen until we were riding on packed snow in Cabot, then finished on Puppy Dog Route back home. Motorcycle tires are surprisingly adept at riding in even snowy conditions, but of course having Traction Control and ABS is almost like using a cheat code.

That's not to say I do it all the time. In fact I've gotten used to storing my bike away after the first real snow storm every year, but that's more because I have kids who depend on me not being a dumb ass.

Suffice to say, riding motorcycles at low temps on road is not a death sentence.

Re: Where did you ride today?

Agreed. Only reason my bike is put away now is because I don't wanna get salt all over it.

Up to that point I saw numerous rides into work with temps in the teens and it was fine, even on a set of Pilot 2CT's that I don't have confidence in. (To be clear, it's not a Michelin thing, these specific pair of tires.... something wasn't feeling quite right on the 3 track laps I rode them so the next great idea was to plop them on the my FJR instead)

much easier than most people think

rule #1 Keep your feet on the pegs, don't even think of using them as outriggers

tires, I went to the Darkside, benefit, real winter rubber, tread designed for snow & ice, and sipes, also heavier tire reduces wheelspin on takeoff
front: Metzler Karoo block knobby drilled stud pockets and regular car studs.

at minimum, keep the bike soaked in WD40, but ACF50 or similar is recommended, get some dielectric grease in ALL of your electrical connections

Yeah, I get that. I rode through a few winters with no car. I guess I just wouldn't qualify it as fun anymore.

    Sunday riding was fantastic!

Re: Where did you ride today?

Annual ride to Monterey, approx 1k miles round trip. Delayed start as 2 friends had battery issues. On the way to the meet spot I catch a 4” nail at triple digits and while performing the repair, the side of the freeway became the new unplanned meet spot.

Quick fix as I keep a plug kit and SAE powered compressor under the seat (seen hanging from passenger peg):

    San Andreas fault:

Tank talk at Fort Hunter Liggett

Getting soaked dropping onto PCH from the newly opened Nacimiento-Ferguson Road.

Re: Where did you ride today?

Took the guzzi out to Hodges dam ohv Park which was a poor choice on my part. As you could imagine the place is a soggy ice scattered mess. Got there, checked it out and basically turned around. Still good to get out on the bike though.

Price looks great on those. How long does the battery last? Ive been wanting battery heated gloves. My wired gerbings work outstanding but theyre cumbersome with having to plug them in and run the wires inside my jacket.

I also wear them skiing. I got all morning out of them with temps in the teens.

It was in the high 30's when I rode, but the lowest setting worked well.

Had a party in SD so took the long way.

Same spots as the other week, much different bike but just as much fun, and plenty of room for a nice change of clothes.

Always knew this day would come…first ticket ever on a motorcycle; cited for 65 in a 55. Not sure if I’m disappointed or relieved about it!

    garbage!

people always go way more than 10 over the limit, and bikes typically get away with a little bit more

    cop was definitely a dick

I got one on Vstrom. Fought it using trial by written declaration, lost, then asked for traffic school and got it.
