Nick Kornfeld, the previous Starter, used to leave running practice to his assistant. He would rollerblade around the paddock all morning, socializing. It was The Don who started calling him The Rolling Gnome.
There was a race in which Jeff Wood and Doug Henry were going at it big time. Doug was leading, and Jeff was biding his time, waiting to make his move on the last lap. Nick went out to the line with the white and checkered flags behind his back. When they came around to start the last lap, Nick inadvertantly threw the checkers instead of the white flag, giving Doug his first straight road racing win.
So I got the first Travelocity Gnome and had him holding a white and checkered flag and put it on the wall. When Nick said that 2006 was going to be his last season, Fred Neergaard commisioned me to come up with a commemorative t-shirt to honor Nick. Here's the artwork:
The first gnome fell off the wall and broke his legs, so I got a spare after gluing the first one together. Then the full sized one came out. After that, the donations started coming in. The Don donated the Florida Gators gnome, Barbara Wood gave me some racing gnomes, I picked up some cheap ones from Harbor Freight for filler.
Recently, KB gave me the unpainted one with the pot of gold, and Oxx gave me the Batgnome last Saturday. I have also found some other good ones, like the one being stolen by aliens and Murray the Bastard with his bagpipes.
So this whole thing started out as a dig at Nick. From there it just got out of hand.

It ain't stopping anytime soon. I get a laugh everytime I see them. I was playing the awesome video game Fallout 3 lately and there are garden gnomes in the game you find. Post-apocolypic Washington DC wasteland you wander around and sometimes you find some beatup lawn gnomes. Even more rare are pristine ones. Guess who's been saving everyone he can find and stashing them in his virtual house in the game? Oh yea me, cause I'm like "What Would Johnny B Do?

I'd like to acknowledge some recent additions to the Gnome Squad.
K.B. donated this one towards the end of last season.
Oxx donated this one at the first event this year.
And during my recent ten day stay at the track, five more donations! The pissed off looking twins were left on the wall during the LRRS riders meeting, the dude with the shovel was given to me by Peg and Dick White, photographers who cover the major events at NHMS, and USCRA scorer Barbara Ann Wood gave me the trumpet playing gnome and a "Paint Your Own Gnome" kit!
Thank you all!
