    All set.

Clamped the head to my bench, folded rag in the combustion chamber to support the valve, deep well socket and a hammer and was able to walk the 3 shims out

No Loudoners trying to run the Daytona 200 this year other than Narbonne?

Holy hell, something bad has been going on in there. At this point, I'd be tearing down the entire head and sending it out for evaluation and a rebuild. Your valves are suspect as well as springs, retainers, cams, etc. Might be new head time.

    The head is already apart.

Everything so far is in excellent condition with the exception of the 3 shims, one upper valve spring seat, one valve spring and I'll be replacing one of the buckets as well just because I don't like the polishing that happened from making contact with the spring seat.

I believe this is the result of low quality shims since everything else checks out so far.

That would make the most sense I think.

Maybe they weren't case hardened? Could they have been exposed to temperatures hot enough to anneal them?

I think they're Temu shims and nothing more. The attached pic gives an idea.

Re: Countdown until the 2025 NEMRR season!

I thought moving to CA and being able to ride all year was going to be a great thing. Living within 20 mins to 3.5 hours of at least six tracks was going to be a great thing. Little did I realize that the "winter race season" overlaps with the "spring/fall race season" for one month in the fall and three months in the spring. I'm actually looking forward to the "downtime" of >100* days in July-Sept right now...

Anyone see the Yamaha approach to valve lapping for the R6? Allow me to save you some time......the process is to buy new valves, lap them then buy new valves and install those.

Re: Countdown until the 2025 NEMRR season!

If they're Ti valves, that makes sense. You use the sacrificial valve to shape the seat, and because you've destroyed the surface coating of the valve doing so it's trash.

Re: Countdown until the 2025 NEMRR season!

My hangup is why, provided it's within spec, the existing valve wouldn't be used to lap the seat. Seems a little crazy to trash a brand new valve then install a brand new valve.

Re: Countdown until the 2025 NEMRR season!

If you start with a used valve, you've got no idea how in spec or not it is, and you're lapping with a now unknown surface. By starting with new you've got a better chance of the resulting seat matching the new valve you put in after. On the flip side, if the seats aren't beat up, you shouldn't HAVE to lap in new valves.

Everything looks good so no valve lapping in the near future.
I saw the 3 notes in the service manual, did some math and, well, I guess I learned something new.

Definitely expensive. I have never lapped ti valves.
