Larry Lap ride report (Spekshul Eddison for Kitt)
Pre grid was a mess, bikes everywhere, and no one helping people get into the right spots, I saw a few wheelies and stoppies, total chaos. Alex helped me get my required livery as the shirt official apparently didn't want to sell to me direct. It might have had something to do with the mob of people around him throwing money in his face constantly, but I'm not certain.
Much to my surprise, behind Larry on the pole were a couple state troopers, who must have missed tech as their lights were clearly not taped up. After that, chaos, bikes from every class, Unlimited GP right down to Sippy Cup entries all mixed together. This was going to be a crazy one wave start and I was getting anxious about it.
After waiting in vein for the mess to die down, someone decided to just start the mess and get it over with. I would have had a good jump on those police edition HDs, but I couldn't see past the two scooters deploying smoke screens (Fuel testing my arse!) and missed the flag drop. Disappointed in myself, I put my head down to try and make the best of it.
I got a good drive into 1, setting up on the outside hoping to make some moves in 1a and 2 but there was just too much traffic. I went to the outside of 1, still blocked, tried the middle, still blocked. I stopped and waited for a moment, then went back to the inside and was still fighting traffic through 1.
Slugging my way up to 3 I decided this time I was going to get serious. Elbows out, hanging off and trying to be as wide as possible, I held my line...
...and was still mired in traffic. This continued up through 12, at which point I ran into my worst fear, bike trouble on the straight. As I was motoring up to 15mph, Growler and his GF? came up on my outside and tagged my foolishly exposed kill switch. Somehow, despite my panic as the wall drifted closer and closer, I muscled the GS back into line, clutched, said a small prayer, and in one smooth motion put the kill switch back to run and thumbed the starter. My relief was palpable as the motor roared back to life.
I had a new mission now... Beat Growler. It was obvious that my GS was no match for many of the pit bikes in this race, but I was kinda certain I could take on a stock Zuma running two up. Again I gathered myself into a full race crouch, and worked my way through traffic to my arch nemesis. I caught him on the outside of 1 as he was checking out the fit of the Larry Lap shirt on a lady rider beside him. My hand darted out, seeking revenge, and found the kill switch on his Zuma.
As his scooter shuddered to a tippy stop, Growler's head swiveled around, mouth agape to find the culprit, and all he could see was me speeding through the T1A gate, victory at hand.
