I know my GS isn't going to be worth a damn if I try to run Daytona in October... will a motard have a fighting chance or should I be trying to scam a crotchity-rocket for then?
ive been to Daytona twice now, ive yet to see a single motard there,
2.5 miles of the track is flat out open. twist and fucking go. if you really want to bring a small bike a 250 is what you will need.

It's not so much that I'm married to a small bike, just looking to determine if my current/future stable will be up to the task, or if I need to plan on finding a loaner for the RoC. Sounds like I need to arrange a loaner.
Your motard will blow up on the 2nd lap.
A 600 will top 6th gear, 30 seconds per lap, twice/lap (old course).

Pretty sure a CRF450 took 3rd in ULSB last year or maybe the year before.
thought I saw a 'tard running around last october too... although you're _really_ asking for it. you're flat out for most of the lap so gear it properly, keep it off the rev limiter and pray. personally, I'd line up a different bike and bring lots of sprockets to fine-tune the gearing. you don't want any built motor (or any stock 'tard) bouncing off the rev-limiter for 2/3 of a lap.

Yeah, I remember seeing one in 07 down there and thinking to myself it would blow up. But it didn't, he got all his practices in and raced it! If you want to, DO IT!
There was a kid running a F450 (450 Single) at Road America Thursday before the AMA race. Road America has three 6th gear straights on a 1000cc Superbike. I asked his dad if they had any problems with the motor popping and he said 'nope, runs great, we've been at a few big tracks'
Stock CRF 450.
Just passing along some info. Personally I wouldn't run a motard at Daytona. You'd need to pack a bag lunch for the straight and really, motards are fun in the CORNERS. Daytona is the worst track on the AMA circuit, the banking is the only (novelty) fun part.

I'm used to packing a lunch already for straights. : )
Maybe I can sneak Doc's hawk out when he's not looking...
