NHMS / LRRS Selling or Giving away email addresses

On March 24th, I received a email from Rising Sun Cycles to my gmail account. Im pretty sure I have received some before, but deleted them. But this time I said, How did a company I never did business with before get my email address?
Well there is only 1 real way that can happen.

So lets look at the email address they sent it to. XXXXXXX+lrrs@gmail.com

Now if you know much about gmail accounts. You can set flags by placing +text after your username and before the @ symbol. So since, Ive only registered with LRRS as XXXXXX+lrrs@gmail.com. They could of only received that email from ONE source.

Ive emailed NHMS and have gotten no response, so here it is for the world to see. Who knows who else they have sold it. So if you used a good email, start looking for a new one.

Steve Aspland owns Rising Sun Cycles and he used to the one doing the LRRS emails and also owns the 'unofficial website for the series: www.LRRSracing.com

Maybe he incorporated his old LRRS email address list to his other business one or maybe you registered on the old LRRS site to sell something?

Either way, Steve does alot of good for the LRRS Series, a slight step above volunteer status IMO, so if you dont want emails from him, unscubscribe or email him at steve@rscycles.com . I do not believe LRRS is selling our email address to outside companies.

no, i never set anything up with lrrs previously. even then i would of not had the +lrrs tag. The only time the lrrs tag was added was when I signed up for my.nhms.com

I get RSC emails and I've never signed up for anything at lrrs (that I can remember). I did send them an e mail asking for a drunkathon donation but that's it.

It's only email. I would rather get emails from local motorcycle resources than the hundreds I get from Nigeria on a regular basis, telling me which lottery I've won.

David, go open your gmail spam folder. Unless you've cleaned it out recently, chances are you've got THOUSANDS of REAL spam emails in there from other sources that gave out your info that you didn't cry over.

You have way too much friggin time on your hands if you're worried about this. Seriously, are you gonna end up being *that* next door neighbor that calls & complains to town hall when someone on your street leaves their trash can out for too long?

I'm gonna have to side with David on this one. Volunteer work is no excuse for "borrowing" a list of email addresses to use for commercial gain. Granted, I'm sure there was no ill intent here, just a lack of understanding of proper internet etiquette.

I hate spam as much as anyone else, but publicly attacking Rising Sun Cycles for this minor offense is not going to help. I actually don't blame Steve for trying to reach out to racers in this tough economy. Considering the benefits Steve and Rising Sun Cycles bring to the racing community, I don't think they deserved being called out publicly like this...

... actually, this thread is probably giving Rising Sun Cycles more positive exposure than negative, so thanks for giving a company that I've always been happy to deal with some free publicity!

I hear you David. Is it wrong? Yes. It is. Shit happens though and I'm sure no I'll intent was meant. We had an incident like this once with our constant contact newsletter. It went out by accident to about 50 ducati owners we had on file. One guy call VIR, mid Atlantic ducati owners and cornerspeed to complain. Caused us untold hassle and embarrassment. All over ONE email.
