    Breaking my chain...

In the process of parting out my bike I've sold the chain, is there a way to break the master without using a chain rivet tool? Should I sawzall the thing? If not, does anyone in RI have a tool I could borrow?

    TIA
    Matt

U can cut the master with a cutoff wheel, just be careful not to hit other links with it.

    Makes sense.

You are welcome to use my tool.
Thanks for the offer, I'm going to try and find something a little more local, that's a long haul to Pomfret for us Rhode Islanders... But if I can't come up with something around here I'll be in touch.

    Re: Breaking my chain...

I usually just grind the heads of the rivets off the rivet master with a dremel. Takes all of 5 minutes.

We know you don't use it. Might as well let someone use it.

    Re: Breaking my chain...

Are you re-using the rest of the chain?

If not, cut it wherever you want with whatever you've got
If so, it'll take a chain tool or some creativity.

    EDIT: Durrr, reading comprehension fail.
Assuming the buyer has a chain tool (which they'll need to install it), just slice n dice.

    Re: Breaking my chain...

If you are parting the bike out why not just take off the swingarm and front sprocket and leave the chain whole?

    Re: Breaking my chain...

I tried using a chain tool on my TLS chain and it stripped the threads off the tool.

I assume you have a rivet style chain? If so, I'd highly recommend a grinder.

I believe the thread title was break my "chain", not Cherry.

Your supposed to grind the rivets smooth and then use the tool

I have never ground the rivets before using the tool. Even when using the crappy harbor freight/cycle gear one.

And good call on the swingarm. I'm use to dirt bikes.

I have the rk chain tool and the harbor freight one. Harbor freight one is great for breaking but sucks for riveting and vise versa with the rk, first chain I broke I snapped the pin.
