    Help! Ideas for Ferring repair

    Need some advice on repair.

The bolt on my F4i that holds the main portion of the right FAIRING to the frame finally gave in. It was punched in a bit from a low speed crash last season, but was still firmly attached. Just yesterday the punched-in bit of the plastic gave in, and now the bolt's doing nothing for the FAIRING.

Any ideas on how to repair this short of buying new plastics? It doesn't have to look perfect, but I want it to be solid at least, so it's not loose you know?

    Ideas?

The last image is of the left FAIRING, what it should look like.

That's an idea - I wonder how it'd look though. Granted, the plastics have some scrapes, but at least their smooth!

Not sure I understand that - is it difficult to do myself, or should I find someone who is experienced in that sort of thing?

I appreciate all the advice by the way, very helpful

Might be Annalisa's Xmas present. Any idea of what they charge for repair and painting the whole fairing set?

(Can't do the estimate thing right now. Not home and can't do pics for a week or so.)

WAIT!!! before you spend the bread. I saw a thread a while back where a guy used either playdoe or putty to make a mold of that part of the ferring, using the mold from the hole on the opposite ferring (same spot) or if you have the piece that gaveout, take some kind of putty or playdoe and wrap it around the broken piece firmly to make an impression of the piece. carefully put the impression on the under side of the ferring and fill it in from the other side of the ferring with an apoxy of some sort or FIBER Glass resin that you can sand down. the apoxy or whatever you use will bond with the ferring and if you do it right, should look like the original recessed hole. fill it in to the appropiate thickness. It may take a few applications. when it hardens, sand off the excess on the rim of the whole and drill out the hole indent where the bolt goes and you should be set. Ill try and find the thread . it definitely looked like a good fix for much less loot if your willing to give it a try. good luck

Nada. Not good with doing that kind of work. I'd rather pay someone to do it the right way then hack it up.

As long as you still have the part that the bolt seated on you can buy some two part epoxy (it comes in a dual tube that looks like a hypodermic needle) once the two parts mix together on injection you have a couple minutes to mix them and apply a bunch of it on the inside of the fairing to hold the piece that came off in place. You have to take off the fairing to do it, but it should cost like $4.99 and it will hold forever. You can buy it at Walmart, or Kmart, or Target.

Re: Help! Ideas for Ferring repair

Thanks for all the advice guys, really appreciate it - considering the fairings are 7 years old and the right one definitely has some bruises, I might have it all repaired if it's not ridiculously expensive, especially to up resale value.

For the short term, these epoxy/bondo ideas are great, but I'm not experienced with that (sanding it down, making it look right, w/e). Is there someone living in MA somewhere who could help me out with it if I provide some compensation? Assuming I get a plan down for the short term, it'd be great if someone with the tools/expertise could give me a hand.

    Thanks

Or, try finding some used plastics on eBay or at a used parts place, like I have been doing for the wife's F3.

There's a thread started within the last couple of days with a listing of used parts places.
