any suggestions as to why my low beam lights are no longer working, but my hi beams are fine.
When bike starts no lights come on, 1st thing I did was to change lights with
2 new bulbs, checked fuses = all good, all cluster gauge indicators work fine,
horn = ok, all turn signals front/rear, brake lights = good
not sure what to do next
.....do I need a whole new complete headlight gauge harness unit? if so are any years interchangeable with 1998 R1.
thanks....
Either the handlebar switch needs to be cleaned or the relay is sticking.
Where are you located?
Dual filament bulb and one filament is burnt out?

no knowledge of multimeter....is this something that I need to buy?
is the low beam on a separate relay vs. high beam
does relay have a fuse which can be replaced...
....are you also suggesting that I undo the control switch unit to see if there is loose wire, or just sticky connection
just trying to get a jump on fixing problem before winter, get parts & repair before Spring inspection!!!
I had R6 2000 with the same problem, so I guess it is the very same thing here.
Yamaha put 2 relays, one is on charge for the 2 bulbs for low beams and the other one for the high beams. The easiest test is to swap this relays and you should have low beams and lose the high beams. If this happens just invest $20 for a relay.
Hope this was helpful.
...interchanged relays 2day
even swap left & right same results = no low beams = high beams only
tried just left relay assembly with both relays = same result, just high beams worked
tried right relay assembly solo with both relays = no low & no high....
if the right assembly is only blown, do I have to replace the entire headlight wire harness...
what would cause an assembly unit to blow?
these relays are a pain to disconnect from assembly, click in tight as hell....what happen to quick release units???
There should not be anything special there, just a switch, 2 relays, few connectors and some wires. If you think that is the wire problem, take the electric tape of and the problem should be visible. Also I would do a quick check on the switch, maybe there is something funny there.
making progress....
disassembled headlight wire harness unit and upon separating the connection
bewteen main unit & headlight unit the red/yellow wire in the master connection unit is fried
(metal black, little bit melted plastic - it is located in the corner #9 slot)
any suggestions on repair or replacement???
thanks...
were you running high wattage bulbs at some point?

yes...
was actually running some higher watts (130) some german type bulbs that dealer sold to me few yrs ago...but was told wattage was safe & wouldn't effect wires, cuz they were used on European R1's
.....I guess I got my answer
now what to do???
130W is way too high - you're lucky you didn't melt anything else. bulb sockets, headlight housings, lenses, reflectors, etc. can all be damaged by the excessive heat that over-wattage bulbs generate.
repair the harness if you can, or replace it. not much more you can do...
