Is there a way to bypass this safety feature? Is it as easy as unplugging the switch wire?
When the kickstand is down I cannot run the bike what so ever... Not sure if thats how this model was set up, or if it's a malfunction?

A kickstand switch is typically just a simple switch, so usually you can just remove it/unplug it.

Chris
But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.
Yeah, but some bikes will let you start them in neutral with the kickstand down, but others won't (Ducati ST4 as an example). In other words, the kickstand switch only acts as a kill switch if the bike is in gear, but if its in neutral you can start the bike normally...Originally posted by Mystery Squid
Not a malfunction... same goes for my bike, it's to prevent you from riding off with the kickstand down.
Personally, I start the bike with the kickstand down quite alot, and if I couldn't start it in neutral with kickstand down, I'd be pulling out that switch fast-like.
Cheers,
Chris

werd... i almost always start the bike when i'm putting on my gear & not on the bike... unless it's already warmed up, then i'm on it & hittin the starter. but if it's cold, i start it up before throwing on my stuff & don't get on it till i'm ready to goOriginally posted by hohum

Thanks for the help peeps...Going to get the battery after work and throw it in and hopefully take a test ride around a few quick back roads to see what else is up with the bike... Hopefully it will be ready to rock and roll next week and I can schedule an appt with the state insp for a reconstr title...

The switch is either normally open or normally closed. If you unplug the switch and the bike doesn't start at all jumper, the wires together and it should start up regardless of the kickstand position. Good Luck...

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
Um yup, I unplugged it and no starty... So what do you mean to jumper the wires, switch the connections over.Originally posted by SSearchVT

He means to try holding the two wires for the switch together to complete the circuit. (jumpering them)
Either the switch acts as cutoff in the open position (in which case if you unplugged it it should run and start with no problems), or the switch acts as a cutoff in the closed position (which seems like its your case, so tape the two wires together to complete the circuit and see if it starts)

Make sure the switch is properly in place, i know one of the bolts that holds it in place sometime loosens up and falls out on the pre 02 models.Originally posted by Half Squid

The R1 should start with the sidestand down as long as the bike is not in gear. If it's in gear and the sidestand is down, it will not start even if you pull the clutch in. Does the neutral light work? It's all directly related and if someone hacked up the harness when they stole the bike, they could very well have cut a wire?
It's not a good idea to bypass a safety feature like that and there's probably a good chance something like that would be checked when you apply for the reconstruction title and inspection

Yeah Mark, there is no Nuetral light while in Nuetral, so your on to something here! Bike starts fine with kick stand up in nuetral or in gear with the clutch in. Will not start either way with stand down... Did you have to pull the clutch in on your 98 to start even in nuetral???
I'll investigate further!!![]()

No, i didn't need to pull in the clutch while in neutral to start it. You've either got a bad neutral switch or a wire has been cut, nothing is wrong with the sidestand switch, if the neutral switch was working properly, it would override the sidestand switch.
I had the R1 service manual but i gave it to Todd to use if and when he ever puts his R1 back together![]()
