    Kickstand Switch Types

I need to use a kickstand switch for a non-motorcycle purpose. I think they are the plunger switches.

I can't remember if they usually work in the direction I need. I pulled the one off my r6 but it was a while ago.

The switch needs to be normally pushed in and the circuit complete, tension required to pull the plunger out which will make the circuit incomplete.

Maybe a brake switch would work too.

    Fairly beefy and weather-resistant.

Thoughts on which switch/bike I could use?

most kickstand switches are "closed" in the 'plunger in' position... I have a few laying around, but the problem is, the plunger is sprung on all the ones I have to be at a natural state of "open".

Front brake and clutch switches work similarly to the above description.

For the function you are looking for, then you really want a Rear brake sensor... Probably any (for free off a race bike) would do. If you're looking to buy new - an aftermarket SuMo switch would be cheaper than an OEM. I had good luck here with my street legal tard bits: http://www.wheelingcyclesupply.com/index.shtml

The type of switch you want is called "normally open"

this is cheap, but probably not weather resistant

I think I have a brake switch but it wasn't the correct direction.

I searched switch at that site and didnt get anything..

I may have some brake switches around... they aren't as easy to mount as the kickstand switches, but let me know. I threw them away more often than not - but if I have one, it'd be free.

normally open refers to the fact that in its steady state, the switch is open, when the switch is activated, it closes the circuit. I assumed thats what you were looking for.

A normall closed switch would be one where in its seady state, the circuit is closed, and when you activate it, it opens the circuit.

I wanted to give you the technical term to help your searching

So your brake switch meets the open/closed plunger in/out criteria in my first post?

If so I might order a bunch.

Do you know what bike it's from?

I gotcha... I want it normally open like you said but I want the plunger in the in position and the tension to occur when youpull out which also closes the circuit.

    Re: Kickstand Switch Types

You're looking for a momentary pull switch. The only thing I can find readily on-line is one for marine applications, made by Cole Hersee, see HERE for an example. Not sure of an OEM switch like this, but maybe see if a Yamaha boat dealer or something has what you need.
I don't know how water tight you need it or what mounting options you need, or I may be able to help you more.

This... (Static = On, Pull = Off)

Is not equal to these: (Static = Off, Pull = On)

If it's the first one, then the switch I'm familiar with will work:

    http://www.bikebandit.com/2006-suzuk...9755#sch509238

The brake switch I'm thinking of is from a GSXR of many vintages I believe:

Suzuki GSXR (should be able to find a dozen on NESR alone) 600 (2006)

    Microphiche: Electrical/WiringHarness
    18: SWITCH ASSY,STO
    1075769
    (495708-001) $20.88

    Re: Kickstand Switch Types

Sorry I confused myself... the first description I initially typed is the one I need.

So it sounds like Kitt's will work. I found a brake switch that was the opposite, I don't know if it is the exception or the rule, but if yours is the way you say then I think that will be good. Thanks kitt!

Thanks anyways Eric but I gave you the wrong description.

ANd xrocket... actually no, I can't, but I appreciate your help. A lame joke is still welcome though.

My Honda has a rotary switch, more reliable as it does not rely on the spring.

I will look for it today, test it - then send it so you can verify before you go ordering them. I am fairly confident it works as described.

    Car door switch

whatever kind if switch you get, normally open, normally closed, you can use a relay to reverse the switching action

    Re: Kickstand Switch Types

So Kitt, I ordered that switch and it does not function in the manner we discussed.

The one listed is normally open (no juice) and plunger in, and when you pull the plunger out, the circuit closes (juice flows).

    We need the opposite.

    Any ideas?

Correct... since stepping down on the brake pulls the plunger and closes the circuit so the brake light comes on.

Go to a place that installs car alarms and remote starts. They will have one.
They are suppose to use a sw like that so when the hood is open the remote start is disabled.

    That makes sense.

But is that spring loaded to have the piston out or in?

We want the piston normally "in" and tension required to pull it out.

I thought the spring attached to the brake lever behind the pivot point (pedal down, spring mounting point up, plunger "in") and plunger "out" / off in relaxed position. Obviously I was wrong, as chris has tested, but I can't find a picture of how that's mounted.
